Description

D. A. RUNNELS.
HOG TENDON GUTTER.
No. 379,286. Patented Mar. 13, 1888.
NiTED STATES DARIUS A. RUNNELS, or LIZTON, INDIANA.
HOG-TENDON CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,286, dated March 13, 1888.
Application filed September 23, 1887. Serial No. 250,517.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DARIUS A. RUNNELs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lizton, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Use in Preventing Hogs from Booting; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for use in disabling the noses of hogs in order to prevent the animals from rooting; and it has for its object to provide a tool by the use of which the cords or leaders of the snout may be severed at a single movement of the operating-knife.
Heretofore it has been common in preventing hogs from rooting to resort to the use of nose-rings or nose-jewels; but the use of these devices has been found to be objectionable, in that unnecessary pain is indicted in inserting the same and the continued use of the device is necessary, and the nose of the animal is thus kept continually inflamed and sore. I have found from experience that the hog may be incapacitated from rooting by simply cutting or severing the leaders or cords controlling the snout. By this operation the rooter is looseued and it becomes impossible for the animal to root. never reunite, and if the operation is per formed with a sharp instrument little pain is inflicted and the injured parts will soon heal. In order to effectually accomplish this result I have provided a simple device by the use of which I am enabled by a single movement to sever the cords or leaders in both nostrils of When once severed, thesecords will (No model.)
represents the handle, which is in all respects similar to that of an ordinary knife and tools of a like character. Detachabl y secured to the smaller end of this handle, by means of the adjustable ferrule B, are two hooked or hawkbill blades, 0 G.
In order to provide for regulating the distance between the blades, so as to adapt the knife for use in operating upon animals of different sizes, I provide a thumb-screw, D, which is passed through the blade 0 and bears against the inner face of the adjacent blade.
Having thus described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for the purpose described, comprising a handle and two independent blades having one end secured to said handle and said blades extended in the same general direction side by side but diverging from the point of attachment with the handle to their free ends, with their cutting-edges extended in the same transverse direction, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a device for the purpose described, the combination, with the handle A and two independent diverging hooked cutting-blades, O O, of the screwD for regulating the divergence of said blades, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
