T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB FIsHnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Noble Township, in the county of lVabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combination Fence Tool, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figuresof reference marked thereon.
The invention relates generally to a combination tool of the portable type that is designed to be used when it would be inconvenient to carry a variety of tools, to bend, cut or twist wire, or as a staple puller, a hammer or a vise, the invention having reference more particularly to a tool of the plier type having pivoted jaws, preferably provided with removable inserts or parts of novel shape, and being adapted for prompt use for various purposes.
An object of the invention is to provide a tool which shall be of such construction as to be adapted for ready use for a variety of operations especially on a farm or other premises, and particularly for wire-working, as in building and repairing wire fences.
Another object is to provide an improved tool which shall be particularly adapted for cutting wire quickly and elliciently, and for twisting wires advantageously under various conditions or circumstances, especially for splicing wires.
A further object is to provide an improved tool of such construction asto embody novel renewable parts that maybeeome dulled or injured in use, or because of misuse or careless handling, which tool shall be adapted for making staples, for driving staples, or for pulling staples from posts or other objects.
A'still further object is to provide an improved combination fence-tool which shall have novel jaws and be adapted for use as a vise or clamp, and shall be power ful, highly efficient in performing its func tions, and durable and economical in use.
With the above mentioned and other ob jects in view, which will be more fully explained in the detailed description which follows, the invention consists in various elements of novel construction and in novel combinations thereof, which will be pointed out and described in sonuectiou with the 1924. Serial No. 724,591.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the invention comprises two members 1 and 1, substantially alike, oppositely arranged and pivotally connected together by a bolt or pin 2 in the same manner as pliers, and having cooperating jaws 3, 3. Each of the members 1 and 1 is provided in its inner side with a circular recess 4 concentric with the pivot bolt 2, and having a flat face 5, which is in a plane perpendicular to the pin 2 and adapted to engage the corresponding face of. the other member. Each of the jaws is transversely rabbeted, as at 6, to removably receive an insert or facing part 7. The bottom of the rabbet 6 has a central longitudinal rib 8, which is adapted to be received in a corresponding groove 9 formed in the under side of the insert 7. Each jaw 3 and 3 is provided with a central transverse bore 10, adapted to register with a threaded bore 11 extending through the insert 7, and into which a screw 12 is threaded to secure theinsert to'the jaw.
It will be noted that the inserts or die parts are easily removable, so that in case they become broken or worn, they may be readily replaced. A number of inserts of different form, for different purposes may also be provided. The form of insert herein shown is provided in its face with a p u al y'ot t ansve se grooves 13 d pted to receive wires, and is also provided at its front corners with reversely oblique grooves 14: and 15, forming corner teeth 16 and 17 which are adapted to be used as staple pullers, and also for bending wire into staples or loops and for slicing the same. One of the grooves 14: or 15 is preferably made larger than the other, so as. to adapt 1t 'to receive wire of heavier gage,
and one of the teeth, as 16, is pointed, so that it is readily engageable with a staple for pulling the same.
Each of the co-engaging circular faces 5 is provided with a transverse channel 18, adapted to removably receive and securely hold a correspondingly shaped reversible the usual manner when the pivoted members are open, as shown in Fig.2. It is to be'noted that the engaging faces of the bits 19 are comparatively narrow and rectangular, so that they are positively held with in the oircular portions 5, and move relatively to each other with comparatively little friction. The slots 21 and 22 extend substantially at right angles to the co-enga-ging faces of the bits 19, so that a cleancut is effected, and when one side of the bit becomes dull, it may be reversed and the other edge used. Each of the pivoted members 1 and '1 is provided rearward of the pivot thereof with a transverse bore-23, with either one of which a substantially U-shaped yoke .24 may be connected by means of a pivot bolt or screw 25, the yoke. being pivoted to one of the members 1 or 1 and embracing the other,and a boss orstop pin 26 is provided on each ofthe members 1 and 1 to limit the .rearward movement of the yoke, as shown in Fig. 1. A thumb-screw 27 is threaded into the outer end or head of the yoke 24 and theinner end of the screw is adapted to engage'the outer face of the adjacent member, .so that by turning the screw 27 inwardly, the jaws ,3 .and 3 are forced'together into clamping relation to a wire or'other article inserted between them. Thus the yoke 24 and thumb-screw 27 co-operate with the jaws to form a clamp or vise. Transverse grooves 28 may alsobe provided in the opposed faces of the members 1 and 1 between the pivot bolt .2 and the clamping articles therebetween.
The outer faces of members adjacent to the jaws 3 and 8 are formed into hammer "heads29, theinner side of these heads being yoke 24, .for
sides of the outstanding boss 30 on its outer side to constitute a seat .31 for the screw 27, and along which the screw may slide when loose without hampering the movements of the members.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a combination tool which answers-all the purposes for which a tool is needed in building wire fences, cut ting, bending and splicing wire, and in forming staples or pulling the same. As a vise, it is adapted to hold strands of wire, bolts and other articles. It is, however, to be understood that the specific construction herein shown and described is for the purpose of illustration and disclosure of the invention, and not arbitrary, and that many variations and modifications may be made in the form, size and proportion of the various parts, as well as in their relative structural arrangements without departing from the salient features of the invention. It is my intention, therefore, to include all such modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of members pivotally connected together between their ends and having co-engageable jaws at one end, a yoke pivotally connected to one of the members onthe side of the pivot pin remote from the jaws. and loosely embracing the other member, a screw co-operatively connected to the head of the yoke and engageable with the member embraced thereby to force the jaws into clamping relation with an article interposed therebetween, and bosses fixed on the members engageable by the yoke to limit its outward swinging movement about its pivot. p
2. In atool of the character described, the combination of a pair of members pivotally connected together intermediately of their ends and having at. one side of the pivot a pair of co-operating jaws provided with removable inserts having oblique corner grooves, a yoke pivoted to one of the members on the'opposite side of the pivot and loosely embracing the other member, a screw threaded engagement with the outer end of the yoke and engageable with the member embraced thereby to force the jaws into clamping relation with an article inter- .posed therebetween, and bosses fixed on the respective members and engageable by the .yoke to limit its outward movement about its Pivot, said yoke being swingable away from the bosses to permit a wider opening movement of the jaws.

In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of members pivotally connected together intermediately of their ends by a pivot pin and having at one side of the pin co-operating jaws with their opposed faces rabbeted, the bottoms of the rabbets being provided with ribs, inserts removably secured in the rabbets, said inserts being provided with grooves for receiving said ribs and having co-engageable faces provided with opposed transverse and also oblique grooves, one of the oblique grooves being wider than the other, a yoke pivoted to one of the members on the opposite side of the pivot pin and loosely embracing the other member, a screw threaded through the outer end of the yoke and engageable with the member embraced thereby to force the jaws into clamping relation with an article interposed therebetween, and bosses on the respective members engageable by the yoke to limit its outward movement about its pivot, said yoke being swingable away from the bosses to permit a. wider opening movement of the jaws.
5. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of crossed main members pivoted together where crossed, each member having ajaw adjacent to the pivot, the inner sides of the aws being transversely rabbeted and the outer sides being recessed adjacent to the end of the jaw, screws rotatably inserted through the aws, each screw towards the other and having a head in the adjacent recess, and inserts arranged in said rabbets and having screw-threaded holes receiving said screws respectively, the face of each insert having transverse grooves and relatively oblique corner grooves.
6. An improved article of manufacture comprising two main crossed members pivoted together where crossed and having each a channel in its inner side at the pivot, each main member having a jaw forward of the pivot and also transverse grooves and a pivot hole rearward of the pivot, two reversible bits secured in the channels respectively and connected to the pivot, inserts secured in the jaws respectively and having transverse grooves and also relatively oblique corner grooves in the faces thereof, each insert having a corner tooth at the outer side of one of the oblique grooves, a pivot pin arranged in the pivot hole in one of the main members, a yoke connected to the pivot pin and loosely embracing the remaining member, and a screw threaded in the outer end of the yoke and engageable with the memberembraced by the yoke.
