L. H. T-ISSOT. COMPOUND CUTTER AND PLIERS.
No. 579,849. Patented Mar. 30, 1897.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES LUOIEN HUGONIOT TISSO'I, OF MONTECI-IEROUX, FRANCE.
COMPOUND CUTTER AND PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 579,849, dated March 30, 1897. Application filed December 17, 1896. Serial No. 616,010. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUCIEN HUooNIor TIs- SOT, of Montecheroux, Department of Doubs, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Compound 0 utter and Pliers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide new and improved cutters and pliers, more especially designed for the use of electricians and other mechanics to enable them to readily, easily, and quickly cut heavy wires without danger of injury to the cutting edges of the cutters.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a planview of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the jaws open, and Fig. 3 is alike view of the same with the jaws partly closed.
The improved tool is provided with jaws A and B, carrying the usual cutters or blades and pivotally connected with each other by a transverse pivot O, as indicated in the drawings. The jaw A is formed with a rigid handle A, and the other or movable jaw B is formed with an extension B, carrying a pivot D, on which is fulcrumed the other handle E, having a forward extension E,adapted to bear against the under side of a projection A formed on the rear end of the jaw A, opposite the beginning of the handle A.
Now it will be seen that when the jaws A and B are open and the operator presses the handles A and E then the extension E bears against the under side of the projection A and rides on the same to form an auxiliary fulcrum for the handle E to close the jaw 13. Thus by the arrangement described compound cutters and pliers are produced which enable the operator to out very heavy wire without exercising a heavy pressure on the handles and without wabbling the pliers in order to cause the cutters to cut through the material.
It is evident that by the arrangement described a heavy piece of metal can be cut straight through without danger of injuring the cutting edges of the cutters or pliers.
When the handle E is moved outward to open the jaws, then the end of the extension E engages and rides on the inside A of the handle A, opposite the projection A and causes the handle E to swing on its fulcrum D and move the jawB into an open position.
Although the device is described and shown as compound cutters and pliers, it is evident that it may be arranged for cutting-nippers and all pliers requiring a strong pressure.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A compound cutter and pliers, comprising the pivotally-connected jaws, one of which is provided with an extension and the other with a rigid handle and a projection at an angle to said handle and lying in direction of said extension, and a movable handle pivotally connected to said extension and having its end forward of the pivot arranged to bear against said projection and said rigid handle, the projeotion and rigid handle alternately serving as fulcrums for the movable handle to close and open the jaws, as and for the purpose set forth.
LUCIEN I-IUGONIOT TISS OT.
