Description
W. H. SPRINKLE.` BELT 0R EYELET PUNCH.
Patented June 30, 1896.

@2L/ETR any,
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
IVILLIAM H. SPRINKLE, OF GALVESTON, INDIANA.
BELT OR EYELET PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,981, dated June BO, 1896.
Application filed April 7, 1896. Serial No. 586,561. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. SPRINKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galvesten, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt or Eyelet Punches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to belt or eyelet punches, and the object is to provide a convenient and effective device of this class that will be simple in its operation, and with little or no liability to get out of order; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction,
combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
Figure lis a longitudinal section of my improved punch with the handle raised. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the handle closed; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the punch and female die for the same, showing their punching and cutting edges.
A is the handle, B the jaw, and G the anvil, all preferably formed of one piece of Inetal. The integral ears a a support the hand-lever D, which is fulerumed therein on the handle A by a bolt or rivet d, and said lever D is provided with an approximately right-angular arm E, the inner crescent-shaped surface e of which is eccentric to the rivet d.
F is the male punch and it slides in a guide f in the handle A, its enlarged head f coming in contact with the eccentric crescent-shaped face e of the arm E of the lever D, and this enlarged head f is provided with a shoulder f2 and one end of a spiral spring G, which encircles the body of the punch, the other end of said spring resting against the end g of the recess II, in which the punch and its spring are located. From this construction it will be seen that the spring presses the punch back so that its head presses against the crescent-shaped arm of the lever and opens it, and now if the handle be grasped in the hand and the thumb pressed against the lever until it is parallel to the handle, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the punch will be forced home.
The anvil C is provided with a central screwthreaded orifice c, in which is secured the female cntting-die I, which has a central longitudinal opening i, into which the cutting edge of the male punch enters. The head of this die I is formed with a circular cutting edge o, which assists in separating the core from the body of the material, when the punch is operated, and the end of the male punch is beveled at 7tand eountersunk at n to form a beveled eountersunk cutting edge, which greatly facilitates the operation of punching, or rather cutting, as the cutting edges of the male punch and female die cut the core out instead of punching it and leaving rough edges, as is commonly the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A tool of the class described, consisting of the handle A, the anvil C carrying the removable female die I having a circular cutting edge o, and the punch F sliding in the guide f, and provided with an enlarged head f a beveled coun tersunk cutting end 7U' n, and a spiral spring G, in combination with the lever D, fulcrumed to the handle at (Z and provided with an approximately right-angular crescent-shaped arm E, the face e of which is eccentric to the fulcruni of the lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVILIIIAM II. SPRINKLE.
Witnesses:
B. B. RICHARDS, JOHN F. EISENBEEG.
