NAPOLEON GRANDCI-IAMP, 0F RAYMOND, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES MYERS, OF RAYMOND, WASHINGTON.
OPERATING MECHANISM FOR BOLT HEADERS AND SHEARS.
To all whom it mow concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON GRAND- CHAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raymond, in the county of Pacific andState of Washington, have invented a new and useful Operating Mechanism for Bolt Headers and Shears, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a machine for heading and cutting bolts, although it can be used as a punch also, and it is the object of the invention to provide a machine of that character having, first, novel means for holding and heading a bolt, second, novel means for-cutting off the bolts or shearing other objects and, third, novel means for actuating the machine to obtain .a maximum power with mnnmum manual effort.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can bemade within the'scope of what is claiinechwithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, WhBIBlTlI Figure 1 1s a side elevatlon of the machine.
' side plate 1, and
Fig. 2 is a top'plan view thereof.
1 Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, with the bolt holding cap swung open.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The frame of the machine embodies a horizontal body 1 supported by suitable legs '2, preferably connected by a tie rod 3. Secured to or integral with one side of the body 1 is an upstanding relatively thick an opposite upstanding side late 5 is secured to the other side of the body 1 to complement the plate 4, said plates 4 and 5 having the upwardly opening recesses 6 and 7 to receive a bolt or other object to be cut in two. The plate 5 is provided at its upper edge with lugs 8 projecting toward and abutting against the upper portion of the plate 4, said lugs belng dis- Specification of Letters Patent.

posed at opposite sides of the recesses (3 and 7, and being secured by screws 1) or other suitable means to the plate a to provide a rigid guide for an elongated slide 10 which moves snugly between the plates 4 and 5 upon the upper edge of the body 1 under the lugs S. i The slide 10 has an upwardly opening recess 11, and a shear plate 12 is inset in and secured to the inner surface of the plate 1 in front of the recess 6 and has a rear upright cutting edge projecting into the recess 6. A shear plate 13 is inset in and secured to that side of the slide 10 facing the plate 1, and the shear. plate 13 rests against and is slidable along the shear plate 12. The shear plate 13 has an upwardly opening recess 14; providing a cutting edge at the rear of said recess and cooperating with the cutting edge of the plate 12 to shear the belts or other objects placed in the recesses 6, 11, 14.- and 7, the slide 10 being moved forwardly to complete the cut.
A plate 15 is inset in and secured to the plate 1 in rear of the recess 6 and rests flatly against the plate 13, the plates 41-. and 15 having registering apertures 16, and the slide 10 and plate 18 having registering apertures 17 to register with the apertures 16, while the plate 5 has an opening 18 opposite the apertures 16. A bolt, cable or other object can. be inserted in the apertures 16 and 17 to be sheared or severed, or otherwise acted upon when the slide 10 is moved forwardly.
The forward end of the body 1 carries a clamp for holding a bolt during the heading operation, and for this purpose, the forward end of the body 1 has an upwardly facing clamp member 19 to which a companion clamp member or cap 20 is hinged at one side, as at 21, to swing open to one side and to swing to closed position above the member 19, as seen in Fig. 41.. A handle 22 is pivoted to the free portion of the cap 20, and has a lug 23 seatable upwardly against a shoulder 24 with which the member 19 is provided, whereby the handle can be swung toward the body 1 for moving the cap 20 tightly into position. The member 19 and cap 20 are each provided with an angular .recess 25 into which a removable die 26 is 29 of the dies 26, and to provide shoulders 30 for limiting the forward movement of the dies, said dies being removable and replaceclamped tightly between the dies 26.
able by other dies having channels 27 of different sizes, whereby bolts of various diameters can be headed.
The forward end of the slide 10, designated 31, has a socket 32 for receiving the shank 33 of a socketed heading die 34 which is movable to and from the rear ends of the companion dies 26. The heading die- 34 is also removable and replaceable by other heading dies having different sizes and shapes of sockets whereby different sizes and shapes of heads can be formed.
To head a bolt, thecap 20 is swung open,
and the bolt is placed in the die 26 of the member .19, with its rear end projecting the proper distance from said die. The cap 20 "to force the metal to fill the socket of the heading die, thereby producing the head of the bolt." The die 34 is then retracted with the slide 10, and the cap 20 swung open so that the bolt can be removed. It is to be noted that'when the bolts are headed, the
shears is also operated, so that the bolts can be cut olf to the desired length by the same operation of the machine.
As effective meansfor forcing the slide 10 forwardly for heading the bolt and cutting a boltor another object, there is provided two pairs of toggle links 35' disposed side by side, and having their remote ends pivoted to the rear end of the slide 10 and the rear end of the body 1, as at 36 and. 37 respec 1 tively. The joint or pivot 38 which connects the toggle links is engaged with a float- "ing lever 39 which is connected to the body '1 between the pivots 36' and 37. Thus, a pair of side linksI-O have their upper ends.
pivoted, as at 41, to the floating lever 39, and have their lower ends pivoted to the opposite sides of the body 1, as at 42. The lever 39 has an upwardly projecting arm 43 between the pivots 38 and 41, and a pair of-links 44 connect the arm 43with a hand lever having the pivot 37 as a fulcrum. The lever 45 has a fork 46 extending over the rear whereby to move the slide 10 forwardly'wit-h" great force. r
The entire machinelis compact and coinparatively simple in construction, and is practicable and serviceable in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is z 1. A machine of the-characterdescribed embodying a body, a slide movable along the body to operate upon a bolt orother object,
the body having a guide for said slide, a
pair of toggle links having their remote ends pivoted to the slide and body, a floating f lever pivoted to the joint ofasaid links, and
a link connecting said floating lever and body. I
2. A machine ofthe character described embodying a body, a slide movable along the body to operate upon a bolt or-other object, the body having a guide for said slide, a
pair of toggle links having their remote ends pivoted to the slide and body, afloatinglever pivoted to the joint of said links, a link connecting said floating lever and, body, the
floating lever having an arm projecting therefrom, a hand lever having as its fulcrum the pivot between the body and the respective toggle link, and a link connecting the hand lever and said arm of the floating lever. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed-my signa ture 1n the presence of two witnesses.
