Description

W RITSOHARD.
PROVISION CHOPPER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 11, 1911.

WITNESSES. INVENTQR COLUMBIA PLANODRAPH cm, WASHINGTON, D c.
WILLIAM BITSCHABD, OFDETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PROVISION-CHOPZPEB.
Application filed September 11, 1911.
To all whom it may concern 3e it known that 1, WILLIAM Rrrsonann, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of lilichigan, have invented a new and useful Provision-Chopper, of which the following is a specification.
'lhe present invention relates more particularly to an instrument which is used to slice and chop vegetables, fruits, victuals, etc.
The object of the present invention is to provide an instrument which can be used in the kitchen, dining table, or butcher shops, for different purposes, though principally it is used for the slicing and chopping of vegetables and fruits, etc.
The preferred construction of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the whole construction. Fig. 2 is a top view of the lower handle B, and knife C. Fig. 3 is a top view of the principal holding member M, comprising the handle A, the jaw 12, and the U-shaped guard 15. Fig. f is a perspective view of the U-shaped guard 15 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 are two views of the adjustable steel plate guard 11.
Similar reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, M is the principal holding member comprising the top handle A, the aw 12 being mounted with an adjustable' steel plate guard 11, and a U-shaped wire guard 15. The principal holding member M, being provided with an aperture in a. long pivot 18, to receive the pivoted cutting member B, with the knife C riveted thereto, and it is obviously seen that when A and B are pressed together, the knife G, and the jaw 12 will come together, thus cutting the dif ferent substances that are held in between. Furthermore, the top surface of the said jaw 12, having a plurality of longitudinal grooves, which run from K to L, wherein the steel plate guard 11 can be adjustably positioned. And in further operating the device to obtain the variable and desired thicknesses of the slices, the steel plate guard 11, having a sharp edge at E, is em- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Serial No. 648,606.
ployeo, by it being slipped on into the proper groove, which runs from K to L on the top surface of the jaw 12, for by placing the guard 11, say, into the first groove to the knife, the thickness of the slices will be exactly the same as the space between the guard 11, and the said knife.
In making still further and accurate use of the instrument a U-shaped wire guard 15 is used, which is hooked on to the jaw 12, and is extending over and beyond the concaved recess 17, this guard 15 is used as a rest, and to assist in the guiding of certain substances, and to keep the object to be sliced. in a parallel and horizontal position, with the said knife, so that in holding the object with the left hand up against the two guards, a two-way parallel slice will be obtained. And it will be understood that the instrument can be used to good advantage without making use of one or either of the two guards, 1.1 or 15. The groove 13 on the top surface of the jaw 12 is of con siderable depth, and having a square edge, so that the said knife will shear the sub stances when it passes same edge.
The sloping concaved recess 17 is to give clearance for objects of round form, and to permit access with the fingers to the knife. The pivot 18 and nut 29, are used in holding the pivoted member B to the principal holding member M. It is obviously seen that in using the device, the two handles A and B are pressed together with the one hand, while the coil spring 20 in between the two handles, does the opening.
The coil spring 20 on the handle B is held in position with a taper head screw passing through the two lugs 24.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will. be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In an instrument of the class described, a holding member, comprising a handle, a pivotal intermediate portion and a aw having a cutting edge, said jaw having a plurality of longitudinal grooves, and a con cave recess, a guard mounted adjustably in one of the longitudinal grooves, a U-shaped In testimony that I claim the foregoing as guard extendlng over and beyond said remy own, I have hereto ai'lixed my s1gnacess, and a cooperating cuttlng member p1vbure 1n the presence of tWo Witnesses.
otod to said holding member, at said pivotal WILLIAM RITSCHARD. portion thereof, and a spring engaging said lVitnesses:
holding and cutting members, substantially J NO. RrrsoHARD,
as shown and described. CHARLES W. KURTH.
