Description
` zh-wmf: N
N.PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEP. WASHINGTON. D C.
t rnANcs H. WALKER., or Boston, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 97 ,996, dated December `14, 1869.
:nvxPRo'vruuruv'I'4 1N BUTToN-HQLE CUTTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
B e it knownV that 1,FRANcIs H. WALKER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusette, haveinvented a new and improved Button-Hole Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the apcompanyingkdrawings, making partof this specicatidn, in which-v Figure 1 is a 'perspective View of the improved instrument. i
Figure 2 is a side view ot' the instrument, with a. `portion broken away .to expose the compoundlevers.
Figure 3 is a top view ot' the instrument, with portions of its handles broken off'.
Similar letters `oi' refereiiee indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
'lhe objectot' this invention is to improve buttonhole cutters, by pivoting the jaw, tti whichthe cutter isapplied, to the stock ofthe instrument, and coni i necting `this jaw, by means .of a lose joint, to handle, which is also pivoted to the stock of the instrument, thereby obtaining a Ycompound leverage for working the cutter, and lallowing this cutter to..be.
' either opened or closed without the use of a spring;
also allowing the cutter to be kept closed when the instrument is not in use, as will be hereinafter explained.
To enable others skilled 4in the an; to understand my invention, I will explain its construction and op-` eration. y p
In. the accompanying drawings- A A represent the handles of the improved buttonhole cutter, which are constructed with eyes upon their ends like a pair .of'shears B is the stock ofthe instrument, which is constructed upon the handle A,and grooved longitudinally to re-Y ceive the pivoted end ofhaudleA and the pivoted end4 ofthe cutter-jaw C. I y
B'. is the jaw of the handle'A, which 'is a fiat plate, constructed ou one end ofthe stock B, and adapted for receiving upoirit the adjustable cuttenbed 1), as shown in figs. l and 2. The handle A', the stock B, and the jaw B', are made in one piece, as shown. y y
y The lever-handle A is pivoted at g in the groove h,
formed in the stock B, and the, end of the shortest arm of this lever-handle has a concave depression or socket, fi, made in it for receiving a corresponding convex surface, n, which is formed on the shortest arm of a lever-jaw, U, which jaw is pivoted, at in the groove h, formed in stock B, as shown in iigs. 1, 2, and 3.
rlhe pivoted K jaw C has a cutter, a, secured to it, adapted for cutting button-holes in cloth, which cutter is so applied to its jaw as to cut uponthe adjustable bed D, when the handle A is moved toward the handle A'.
The cutter-bed D is pivoted, at l1, to the jaw B',
`and secured 4rigidly to this jaw in any desired position, by means of a screw, c', the shank ot which( passes up.
through -a segmental slot made through the jaw B', and is tapped into the cutter-bed'.
This bed B is reversible, and adapted for button-holes of different lengths. v
It will be seen, from the above description, that the cutter-jaw (l is not a part of the handle A, but that it is pivoted to the stock B ot the instrument, inde pendently of the handleA, which moves this jaw.
I obtain, inthis way, a compound leverage, which will greatly lessen thepower required to forcethe cut ting-edge of the cutter a through thick or thin material.
I also connect together the short arlns of the jaw-4 lever'G, a handle-lever, A, by means of a loose joint,
which will allow the jaw-lever to beoperated without the employment ot' a spring, for it will be seen that the lever-handle A will act upon the jaw G, either to open or to close it.
One great advantage attending my improvement is, that when the instrument is not in immediate use,the
'cutter a may be closed upon `the ,bed D, and will re-` i main in this position, where it will not be liable to injure anything, nor become injured itself.
Having` 'described my invention,
XVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-f' The combination of adjustable cutter-bed I), with a cutter-carrying jaw, C, which is connected to a leveru handle, A, by a loose joint, substantially as land for the purpose described.
