Description
drawing, fig. 1.
nit
ed am strut eeaa The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all wiwm it comm-n Be it known that I, A. J. LYrLn, of 'West Union, in the county of Adams, and State of Ohio, have invented new and improved Bitten-Hole Gutters; and
I do hereby declare that thefifollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing button-hole cutters, whereby the same are more simple in their construction, and more effective in their operation. 1
It consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings- Figure'l is a side ,view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a part of the lower ja and slotted plate on the same.
Figure 3 is a partial cross-sectional view of I my in-- vention, taken in the line :v-x, fig. 1.
Figure, 4 is a partial longitudinal section of the same, taken in the line y y, fig. 1. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The button-hole cutter-is of the same material, and
is in the same general form of. implements for the cutting of button-holes now commonly in use, consisting of two metallic rods pivoted together, so as to form handles at one end, and a pair of jaws A an B, as shown, at the other end.
Near the end of the upper jaw A, and extending through a slot made longitudinally in said jaw A, is a thin steel blade, 0, made in the form as shown in the Said blade 0 is held in position in said jaw 'A, by a pin passing through the 'sam'e,.on the upper side of said jaw A, and extends downwards towards the jaw B, and is brought to an edge, so as to form a knife.
Directly back of the blade 0, and working in a screwthread in the jaw A, is an adjusting-screw, D, said adjusting-screw .D terminating at. the lower end in a punch, to make the enlargement in the button-hole. Upon the upper part of the lower jaw B, is a brass plate, E, held upon said jawB by a bolt, F, and nut 0 upon said bolt, as shown. Said bolt F moves in a slot in the lower jaw B, and-the plate E, and thus serves also as a gauge for the positionof the button-hole, with respect to the edge of the cloth in which the buttonholes are to be cut. Near the end of the plate E, under the blade 0, is a slit to receive the blade 0 through the same.
It has heretofore, been found very diflicult to cast a slot in the lower jaw-of a button-hole cutter, sufliciently narrow to adapt the cutter for use in very thin cloth; as the operation of the jaws forces the cloth through the slot and leaves it uncut. The object of the plate E is to overcome this diii'iculty, as a very narrow slot can be made in it to receive the cutter, or the plate can be adjusted with relation to the slot in the cast-metal jaw, in such a manner as to leave a very small opening for the passage of the cutter.
Such is the shape of the blade 0, as will be seen from the drawing, the same being wider near the upper jaw A, that the further said blade C is forced through the cloth upon the plate E, the longer will be the buttonhole cut by the same. By turning the adj usting-screw D, the length of the button-hole may easily be regulated, the extent that the blade 0 may be forced through the cloth upon the plate E, being determined by the screw D.
I claim as new, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent The slotted plate E, in combination with the slotted jaw B, of a button-hole cutter, as herein described for the purpose specified.
A. J. LYTLE.
