Description
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM LIEBER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN BUTTON-HOLE CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,342, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it mm1 concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LIEBER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button-Hole Cutter; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure l represents a side elevation of this invention. .Fi g. 2 is a transverse section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line a: x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached elevation of the knife. Fig. et is an edge vien7 of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a button-hole cutter the knil'e of which is guided in a suitable guide-groove formed by a bracket extending from that handle which also connects with the arm 011 which the anvil is tixed, in coinbination with a lever-handle the fulcrum of which is close to the knife and on its outside, and which is provided with a stud catching in a slot in said knife in such a manner that the cutting-edge comes down flat upon the mate rial to be cut, said edge being parallel with the face of the anvil whether the knife be raised or lowered; and, furthermore, by having the fulcrum on the outside of the knife a great leverage is obtained, allowing to cut button-holes through thick or thin material with ease and facility.
A represents a handle, from which extenda suitable guide-groove, in which moves the knife d. This knife is made in the form to cut a button-hole of the ordinary shape, and it is provided with an oblong. slot, c, (see Fig. 3,) into which catches a stud, f, projecting from the inner surface of the lever-handle B. This lever-handle is connected to the handle A by means of a pivot, g, which has its bearing in the bracket a, close to the knife, and on the outside thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
rEhe anvil c is adjustable on the arm i), so that it can be set for button-holes of dil'erent length.
By having the knife fitted into a guidegroove in .the bracket a the cutting-edge thereof remains parallel with the face of the anvil, Whether said knife be raised or lowered, and it cuts evenly through the material from beginning to end, Without being liable to break or crack; and, furthermore, by having the pivot g close to the knife, or on its outside, the lever-handle gives considerable leverage, and the operator is enabled to cut button-holes in thick or thin material with little exertion.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted knife d operating in combination with the grooved bracket a, provided with stud f, arranged with the adjustable anvil c on bracket b, substantiall y as represented and described.
W. LIEBER.
