"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WASHINGTON GRISWOLD, OF POTTERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENTl IN. SAW-GUMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,3 18, dated February 2, 1875; application Iiled November 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GnIsWoLD, of Pottersville, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in 'Saw Gummers, of which the following is a specification: y
The Object of this invention is to improve the present machines used for gumming saws; and it consists in the arrangement ofthe cutters of an apparatus for cutting between the teeth or gummiug, constructed substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a side view, showing the cutting-cylinder in cross-section. Fig. 2 is a top view of the entire machine, the saw being seen in both gures in dotted lines and the bow cut oii".
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
bow E rises up from the screws, as seen in Fig.
l, to give room for the saw, as indicated in Fig. 1. H is the saw. I is a hollow sleeve, attached to the side of the handle. J is the cutting-cylinder. a shank, which passes-through the sleeve. lIt is y held in position by the shoulder K and by the crank L, as seen in Fig. 2. The cylinder is made hollow, and has one or more slots through its surface. M M are cutters, passed through the slots, which are inserted from the end, and which are beveled at the inner ends, so that they correspond with the surface of the cylinder. The cutters cross each other, and are fastened by the set-screws N N. Their edges project sufliciently to take a thin chip from the saw as the cylinder or cutter-head revolves.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the cutters M M and cylinder J, constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described, for, the purposes set forth.
GEORGE WASHINGTON GRISWOLD.
