T() ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. BARNEY, of Philadelphia, PhiladelphiaI county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Combined Eraser and Letter-Opener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view ci' my combined eraser and letter-opener, and
Figure 2 a view of the back edge of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The present invention consists in a blade of steel or other suitable material, having two edges made 'of an are or curvilinear shape, intersecting` each other at one end of the blade where the blade is sharp-pointed, the outer or convex cdgeot` the bla-de being made suitable for use as an eraser, with the inner or concave edge suitably sharpened for cutting paper more particularly.
A, in the drawings, represents my improved eraser and letter-opener combined. This implement consists of a blade, B, of steel, the two edges C and D of which are respectively made of a convex and concave shape in the direction of their length, intersecting each other atone end, E, where the blade is sharp-pointed. The convex edge C of the blade B is suitably bevelled for use us an eraser, while the concave edge D is sharpened for cutting paper or other similar material, more particularly as by such edge it is intended to cut open sealed envelopes, to do which the point of the blade is properly inserted, and the knife or blade pushed forward along the edge ofthe envelope, cutting it, as it proceeds, from end to end. The cutting blade B is shown as secured to one end of a. handle, F, by rivets or in any other suitable manner; but in lieu of the handle F, it may be hung to a ease of suitable construction, and in such a manner that when to be used it can be swung out of the same, but when not to be used,` can be suitably cased for being carried in the pocket or about the person.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t- The blade B, having convex and concave sharpened or cuttin'g' edges, intersecting in a sharpened point, substantially as described, forming a combined eraser and letter-opener.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 15th day of January, 1867.
GEO. C. BARNEY.
