Description
. titled tant @wel mit.
Lette/rs Patent No. 101,041, dated .fl/[arch 2Q, 1870.
Mem-
IMEROVIEMENT IN KNIFE FOR SPLTTING- WGOD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, Saxon .1.RAYM0ND, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New' York, have invented certain Improvements in Knife lfor Splitting Wood, of which the following is a speciiication.
rMy invention relates to that description of knives that is used for splitting wood for fuel; and
lt consists in a combination of cutters, so constructed that the block of wood is split into several angular pieces at one operation.
It further consists in forming the cutters in one solid piece of metal, and also in the manner of arranging the lateral cutters with the slabbing cutter, so as to divide or split the Wood into angular strips at one operation, and at the same time to free the cutters by forcing the strips of wood outward.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a (front) side elevation of my improvement.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken on thc line :t a, g. 1. Y
`Figure 3 is a plan view looking in the direction indicated by the arrow on iig. l.
Figures 4 and 5 are plans showing the different modes of arranging the cutting-blades.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate corresponding parts. f
'lo enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iv will describe its construction and operation. o
1n the accompanying drawings- A represents the slabbingcutter of the knife, having several cuttingilanges a on one side.
These flanges :t arc arranged with their cuttingedges on an acute or obtuse angle with the cuttingedge of the slabbiug blade A, so as to split the block oi' wood into angular pieces.
The cutter A, with its flanges a, I make out of solid metal, either by casting or forging. It is then worked into shape and hardened ready for use. lllhe flanges a are iliade thicker at their junction wit-l1 the cutter A than at the outer edge, thus forcing the strip of Wood outward in the act of splitting, and thereby freeing the knife in its operation; and the cutting-flanges a may be arranged upon the cutting-blade A so as to set at dierent angles, as represented in figs, 3 and 4, or if desired, a center cutting-flange may be placed at right angles with the knife A, as represented in iig. 5, but the arrangement shown in iig. 3, I prefer.
The operation of splitting the wood is as follows:
The knife, when forced into the block, outs a slab therefrom, and at the same time the cutting-flanges a enter the slab, dividing it into the desired angular' strips, ready for use.
Having thus fullg described the'construction and operation of my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A knife for splitting wood, consisting of a straight blade, A, and diagonal bladesc, when constructed and operated as specified.
