IMPROVEMENT IN GUTTERfHEADS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: A

Be it known that I, W. G. FARMER, of Burlington, in the county of Chittenden, and in the State of Ver mont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Matcher-Heads and Knives; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of knives for cutting tongues and grooves, and a watcher-head, in `vhich the said knives are placed. i

In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this Speciiication, and in which l Figure 1 is a side view,

A represents a. circular plate or block7 inI the centre of which 4is a collar. B. In this collar the Shaft for turning the inatcher-head is inserted, and securedI by the screw C.Y

The n'pper side oi' the plate A is provided with three straight grooves, a a, forming a triangle, aS shown in iig. 2. v

In these grooves the knives D D are placed, and similar grooves in the upper movable block, E, hold them firmly in proper position when the two plates arejoined together. The block or plate E is also of circular form,

and provided through its centre with a hole, so that it can'slip around the collar B.

Screw-bolts, F F, and nuts, G Gr, hold the two plates A and E iirmly together, preventing the knives from moving.

The knives D D, for cutting grooves, ai'e made of steel, and consist of bars, with a Straight flange or proljectioh, ofthe same size as the'groove required, running along the centre of said bar.

One end of the bar, including the ilange -or projection, is bevelled, as seen in r'ig.2, So aS to leave the flange with a sharp-pointed edge,r and the top of the said ange or projection is grooved, so as to forni Sharp cutting-edges. I

The knives H, iig.' 3, to cut the tongue.are made of similar bars of steel, but instead of a flange or projection, they are provided with a groove, having sharp cutting-edges, and the groove to be of such size as the'tongue desired.

The knives H 'H may be placed in the same matcher-head as the knives G G, if ofthe same thickness, but Y if of different thickness, a Similarly-constructed matcher-head, with grooves to suit, Vis substituted.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is- The circular grooved plate A,`provi'ded with a collar, B, and movable grooved plate E, in combination with the knives D D and H H, all constructed as. described, and operating Substantially as Aand for the purposes herein Set forth. f`
