Description

einen sem @anni @Mire Letters Patent No. 108,119, dated October 11, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CUTTERS- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JURIAS G. Daunen, of Pine Grove, in the county ot' Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improve mentin Tobacco-Cutters; and. I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a top view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof.
My invention relates to means for cutting manufactured tobacco, and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a slotted block, with curved blade pivoted thereto, and provided with au operating lever, where by the blade is pressed. downward and into the slot, thus cutting the tobacco smoothly and readily.
Also, in providing a gauge so arranged that any required length of tobacco may be cut off.
The letter A of the drawing designates the baseblock, slotted at B, and provided with the nprights C C, to which the blade and lever or handle are pivoted.
D represents the blade, suitably curved and pivoted at the heel, in the manner shown.
The rear portion of the knife is provided with teeth a, arranged in the arc of a circle, and gearing with a similar toothed are z, formed ou the end of the pivoted lever E.
F designates a gauge or scale, secured to the block A by the thumb-screwb, and designed to afford a convenient means for measuring the length of tobacco to be eut o.
The curvature ot' the blade is designed to produce a downward cut,and at the same time to cause the edge to be drawn tothe rear, with a saw movement, thereby rendering it especially effective in cutting tobacco, which, when manufactured, has considerable tenacity and density.
In ol'der to prevent the tobacco from slipping to the front when pressed by the edge of the knife, the base-block is serrated or corrugated on its upper surface on each side of the slot B.
The curved blade is made narrow to avoid the friction necessarily consequent in cutting this tenacious and gummy substance.
The slot in the bed-block is rendered necessary by the curvature ofthe edge ot' the knife. It also assists the action of" the blade and protects the edge thereof when not in use.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tobacco-cutter herein described, having serrated slotted bed-block A, provided with a gauge, F, and pivoted curved blade I), provided with the tooth- `ed arc a, gearing with the serrated end of the operating lever E, in the manner and for the purposes herein substantially shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have here unto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. J URIAS G. DREHER, M. D. Witnesses DANIEL KITZMILLER, LEVI S. SPANGLER.
