Description
'dimmi 'gime @met @twine Letters Patent No. 99,154, dated Jmruzwy 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENT FOR SLITTING AND J'OINING- RAGS IE'ORCARPETS.
emo-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
v.To all whom it may concer-n Be it known that I, BENJAMIN hF. CADY, of Chittenango, in the county of Madison, and State of New York, have invented a new and Valuable Improvement in Machines for Tying Carpet-Rags and I do hereby declare that the folio ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to annexed drawings, making `a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure vl, of the drawings, is a side view-of my carpet-rag-tying knife, with shield.
Figure 2 is a vertical central section through same.
Figure 3, partial view, showing process of tying.-
Figure 4 represents the tie.
My invention relates to the manufacture of ragcarpets; and
1t consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement ofdevices by which the process of tying stripls-of rags designed for Woof may be greatly facilitate lhe letter A, of the drawings, represents a staple or frame, having a thumb-screw, B, arranged for attachment to the side of a bench or table. This frame is also provided with a ring, in which the handle of the knife hereinafter described is placed, in the manner shown. i l
The letter D represents myknife-handle, and letter E the blade thereof, held firmly in the handle by means of the ring or band shown at F.
My knife-blade is constructed in the form shown on the drawings, the front or edge portion being rounded like the point of an ordinary pocket-knife, and having a notch, G, cut out of its back or thick portion, for the purpose mentioned hereafter.
My device is operated as follows, namely:
I first place the strip of rag to be attached to the main roll, into the notch, at its middle, or, as near as may be, midway between the ends of said rag; I then lap the ends of the two pieces of rags, that is, the end ofthe rag last tied and the one I propose to tie, taking care that the end of the rag iu the notch shall be placed above the other; I then grasp each end of the lap s0 formed with the thumb and foreinger of a hand, and passing the lapV upon the point of the knife cut a slot throughboth pieces that form the lap; I then pass the lap vso formed, and cut down over and below the notch G, in the manner shown on iig. 3. This movement forces the rag that rests in the notch through the slot in the lap, forming a loop as shown. I then take hold of the loop thus formed and draw the piece to be attached through -the slot. The knot is thus formed, and assumes the form shown on fig. 4 of the drawings.
' The coiled-spring attachment represented by the letter H, serves as a guard and shield to the knife, to prevent the operator from cutting his hands while the tying-process is carried on.
' lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tying-apparatus herein described, having frame A, screw B, handle I), blade E, with its notch Gr and spring and shield H, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified and shown.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two witnesses.
B. F. CADY.
lVitnesses SAMUEL L. COND, Winsen S. CoMAN.
