tain new and useful SAW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1915.
Application filed April 29, 1914. Serial No. 835,235.
0 all whom. it may concern lie it known that I, An'rin L. CLFNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springdale, in the county of Washington and State of Arkansas, have invented cer- Improvements in Saws, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in saws and the object of the inven-' tion is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed with convenience and facility as a bevel square.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and ad vantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Thenovel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a saw constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2'0f Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of. the saw handle herein set forth; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-1 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a saw blade having suitably secured thereto the handle .2, and 1t,1s to be.
observed that the inner edge 3 of the handle is at right angles to th e and back edge 4 of the saw may be employed as a square. It is also to be observed that the rear longitudinal marginal portion of I otally engaged,
back 4 of the blade '1 so that such inner edge 3 of-the handlelie the upper edge of the handle 2. Pivas at 9, with the under surface of the strap or arm depending within the kerf 11 of the saw 8 is the segment 10- handle 2 and provided with the segmental slot 12' through which is projected the clamping screw ily perceived that the strap or arm 8 may be adjusted-at any desired angle and effectivelymaintained im such adjustment through the medium of the clampingscrew or member 14:. In order that the degree of angle of adjustment of the strap or arm 8 may be readily determined, 1 provide the inner marginal portion of such segment 10 with the graduations 15, such graduations serving for a purpose and in a manner which is believed to be clearly obvious. In order that the clamping member or screw 14 may be operated with convenience and facility, I psovide the same with the winged head 16. The clamping screw or member 1% intermediate its length is providedwith an annular groove or recess 17 in which the segment 10 is received and coacting with theinner-extremity of the shank ofthe member 14 is a.
*nutor bar 18 positioned within the recess or pocket 19, the walls of the pocket 19 maintaining the nut or bur 18 against axial rotation. It is also to be observed that the nut or bur 18 is of a thickness less than the 14 whereby it will be readdepth of the pocket or recess 19 in order that the nut or bur 18 may have the requisite clamping coaction with the segment 10. From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a saw constructed sembled, and it will also be obvious that my v invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I'do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A measuring instrument comprising a blade and a handle, said handle being provided with a kerf to receive an extremity of the blade, the back edge of the blade and the inner edge of the handle being perpendicularly related, an arm pivotally engaged with the forward portion of the handle at a point substantially flush with the back edge of the blade, a segmental member pivotally secured to the arm and projecting Within the kerf of the handle, said segmental member being provided with an areuate slot a clamping member rotatablysupported by the handle and projecting through the slot of the segmental member and in swivel engagement with said segmental member, the inner extremity of said clamping member being threaded, said handle beihg provided with a recess in communication with the kerf thereof into which the threaded extremity of the clamping mem- ARTIE L.
