CONRAD MARX, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
COUPLING FOR UMBRELLA-HANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1907.
Application iled January 3l, 1907. Serial No. 354,996.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that 1, CONRAD MARX, a citizen oi the United States, and a resident oil the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Couplings for Umbrella-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
'lhe purpose oi the invention is to provide a simple and readily applicable means for coupling the members or' umbrella and parasol handles, constructed otmorc than one piece of material, the coupling being so made that the handle in its entirety will not turn thereon; and a further purpose oi the invention is to provide a coupling of the character described that can be applied directly to the umbrella stick or rod and be secured thereto.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a handle and a side elevation of the applied coupling; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the lower portion of the handle and a coupling; Fig. 3 is an enlarged lower end View oi the lower section of the handle; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the coupling taken practically on the line 1 4 of Fig. l.
The handle in the drawing is shown constructed oi two members or sections A and B. Ordinarily when the handle is so made the body or inner section A is of a hard and generally ornamental material, while the outer or head section B is made of wood, and when so made is provided with a casing 10 of metal either plain or ornamented. The outer or head section B ol the handle is provided with a bore 11 extending through generally from end to end. but not necessarily so, and particularly the inner portion ot' the said bore is threaded to receive an outer end of a screw rod 13, which rod is loosely passed through a bore l2 formed in the body section A of the handle extending through it from end to end and registering with the bore 11 in the outer or head section l5.
At the outer end ot' the plain bore 12 of the body section A, the outer or upper end of said body section is provided with a countersink 14, as is shown in Fig. 3, and recesses 15 are likewise produced in the said outer or Lipper end oi' the body section A communicating with the countersink, as is shown in Fig. 3, and the said recesses 15 are opposite each other, as is shown in the same iigure.
The upper or inner end of the screw rod 13 is received in the tube 16 and this tube is adapted to be slid over the upper end ol' the rod or stick oi the umbrella and to be secured thereto in any approved manner. The tube 1G is secured to the upper end ol' the screw 13 in the manner particularly shown in Figs. 1 and 4, wherein the inner end portion of the tube lo' is pressed so as to close tightly around the screw 15 and to form opposing wings 17 ol' such dimensions that said wings can enter the recesses 13 in the body section A oi the handle and in order to prevent the tube 16 from possibly turning on the screw 13 at the opposite sides el the rounded contracted portion ol the said tube, longitudinal indentations 1S are made that force the material of the tube into the thread of the rod. The tube having been securely fastened to the rod 13, the rod is slipped through the bore 12 of the body A oi the handle and is then screwed into the bore 1l. ot' thc outer or head section B, thus firmly and securely connecting the two said sections.- Whcn the rod 13 has been fully screwed to place, the wings 17 formed' in the manner stated will enter the recesses 15 owing to the countersink 14 and so prevent the handle in its entirety from possibly tiuning on the coupling medium.
Preferably the tube 1G is covered with a cement so as to give that portion of the handle a regular or uniform contour, and this cemented portion oi the handle may be also provided with a casing 20 of metal for example.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
1. In an umbrella handle, a handle formed of sections one section having a plain bore and the other a threaded bore, the section with the plain bore havingr recesses in one end, a screw passing loosely through one section and screwingiuto the other section, and a winged tubular member at one end of the screw, thc wings of the said member entering thc recesses of the said section and preventing the handle from turning en the screw.
2. In umbrella handles, a handle constructed in secA tions, the inner section of thc handle at its outer end beingr provided with recesses, and each section with a bore, the bore of the inner section being located between the recesscs in its outer end, a connecting screw loosely passed into the inner section of the handle, being screwed into the outer section` and a tube secured to the lower end of the said screw and having opposing wings adapted to enter the recesses in the outer end of said inner section, the tube bcini,r adapted to receive the stick or rod of an umbrella or parasol.
3. In an umbrella handle, a handle constructed in sections, each section being provided with a bore, the inner section being provided with recesses in its outer end at the sides of the bore, a screw connecting the sections of the handle, a tube secured to the outer end of the said screw clamped thereon and provided with opposing wings that enter the said recesses in the inner section, the said tube being adapted to receive the stick or rod of an umbreila or parasol. and a cement-covering for said tube.
4. in an umbrella handle, a handle constructed in sec tions, the outer section being provided with :i threaded rod of an umbrella or parasol handle, a casing secured to 10" the inner section, and u filling of cement between the tube and casing.
In testimony whereof l have signed my nume to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CONRAD MARX.
