1 Claim. 1
This invention relates generally to punches, and more particularly to a punch having a resilient handle or hand grip portion compressed between a head member and a nut threaclably engaged on the shaft of the punch.
An object of this invention is to provide a punch with a handle constructed so as to provide an absolutely firm grip or steadying member but having this hand grip slightly resilient or compressible so that the jar imparted to the shaft of the punch is transmitted to the hand of the operator in greatly reduced form.
Another object of this invention is to provide a punch with a handle which is of such size, shape and weight, and with this weight so proportioned and distributed as to make this tool at once safe and convenient to use.
And a last object to be specifically mentioned is to provide a punch which will fulfill the objects mentioned above without detracting from the feel of the punch, when used for the purpose for which this punch is particularly designed, namely, the application of rubber heels to boots and shoes by shoe repairmen.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, this invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the assembled punch;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the punch with parts being shown in elevation, to amplify the illustration of this invention; and
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the assembled punch.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar or identical parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
As shown in the drawings, this invention includes a cylindrical shaft Ill having an enlarged head portion l2 and a medial portion l4 screw threaded. The working face of the shaft It] may be countersunk as indicated at l6, and the portion between said working face I6 and the threaded portion l4 may be tapered as at l8.
The construction of the handle portion will now be described in detail. A metallic washer 20 is placed on the shaft H) to abut the head l2 and a leather covered metal washer 22 and a plurality of differentially sized washers 24 are placed side by side on the shaft with gradually diminishing sized washers being placed toward the end [6 of the tool. Another plain metal washer 26 is then inserted, with a lock washer 28, and a nut 30 is then screwed tightly onto the threaded portion M of the shaft to hold the above mentioned transversely disposed members compressed together. The washers 24 may be either metal or of a somewhat compressible material such as leather, and after the nut 30 has been tightened on the assembled transverse members, the assembly may be turned in a lathe or otherwise operated on to provide a smooth profile, and a handle will thereafter assume the appearance indicated in the drawings. It is preferred for some uses to cover the built up portion of the handle with a single layer of compressible material such as leather, as indicated at 32, in Figure 2, the ends of the leather covering 32 being simply turned under the washers 22 and 26 before the nut 30 is finally tightened on the assembly.
The operation of this device is essentially that of an ordinary punch but it may be noted that this punch is particularly well adapted for such uses as the application of rubber heels to shoes, an operation wherein a single stroke of the hammer is followed by a shifting of the punch into a new position, and since such shifting of the punch is done at great speed the safety features of this punch for such a use become of paramount importance. Other and various uses of this device will occur to those who normally use small punches of this character.
The advantages of this invention will be obvious when consideration is had to the structural details described above, but in recapitulation, it may be noted that the handle portion is relatively large and slightly compressible so that the punch will not easily slip out of the hand of the user, and the shape and resilient character of this handle greatly increases the safety with which the device can be handled quickly, without any lack of feel or diminished vision of the work operated upon.
Though there has been shown a particular embodiment of this invention, this application is not limited to this particular embodiment but it is desired to include in the scope of the invention the construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A punch including a shaft screw threaded externally of a medial portion thereof and having an enlarged head portion, a nut engaged with said threaded portion, and a resilient hand grip UNITED STATES PATENTS portion enclosing said shaft and compressed be- Number Name ate tween said head and said nut and comprised of a 78,947 FaIIISWOIth J1me 3 plurality of transverse layers of resilient material 5 433,284 Gould July 29, 1890 covered with a layer of non-metallic material. 737,616 Harrell Sept. 1, 1903 JAMES G.
