Description

H. HAMPTON.
BROOM HEAD.
APPLICATION FILED s3 Patented Aug. 12, 1913.
UNITED STATE PATENT @FFTCE.
HERBERT HAMPTON, OF KINDER, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 CHAS. F. HOWELL, OF KINDER, LOUISIANA.
BROOM-HEAD.
Application filed September 25, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT HAMPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinder, in the parish of Calcasieu, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BroomHeads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in broom heads, and more particularly to one so constructed that the broom may be conveniently removed when worn and replaced by a new one.
The invention has for its object to pro vide a broom head constructed in such a manner that the broom will be held in place therein by clamping members which may be easily manipulated to remove the broom from the head.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, combinations and arrange ments of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the de vice. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4: is a sectional view on line 41 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar View on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view on line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a handle, which may be of the usual construction and has its lower end secured in a ferrule 2 formed upon the up per end of the rectangular casing 3, said casing being formed from suitable metal. A pair of vertically disposed arms 4: are provided, and are connected at their upper ends by a bar 5 which passes through an opening in the handle 1, the lower ends of said arms are provided with lateral extensions 6 which are engaged in the opposite ends of a clamp plate 7, said plate being provided with a plurality of alined perforations 8 which extend longitudinally of Specification of Letters Patent.

the plate, the purpose of which will appear later. The arms 1 are provided intermediate their ends with shoulders 9, which are engaged by coils 10 which form a continuation of the upper ends of the arms 11, said coils terminating at their inner ends in a yoke 12 which bears against the lower end of the handle 1. The arms 11 are substantially the same length as the arms a, and have their lower ends formed with hooks 13 which engage the perforations 14 formed in the opposite ends of the plate 15. The inner surface of the plate 15 is provided with a plurality of horizontally alined spurs 16 which are adapted to engage the perforations 8 carried in the clamping plate 7, after said spurs have passed through the broom straw 17 forming the broom proper. A how 17 is provided and has its ends connected to the bar 5, and in conjunction with the yoke 12 holds the device against lateral movement in respect to the handle 1. The straws forming the broom 17 are secured together at their upper ends by a canvas or other suitable fabric casing.
From this construction it will be seen that the broom 17 may be readily replaced in the casing 3, and upon forcing the arm 7 outwardly the plate 15 will be moved sufficiently away from the plate 7 to permit the broom to pass between the said plate, whereupon when the arms are released the spurs 16 will pass through the broom jaws and engage in the perforations 8, thereby securely holding the broom in place.
Nhat is claimed is In a broom head, the combination with a handle, of a casing secured to the lower end of the handle, a pair of spaced vertical arms connected at their upper ends by a bar which passes through said handle, shoulders formed intermediate the ends of said arms, lateral extensions formed upon the lower ends of the arms, a clamping plate having its opposite ends secured to the extensions, and provided with perforations, a second pair of arms having their upper ends terminating in coils encircling said shoulders of the first named arms, said coils terminating at their inner ends in a yoke bearing against the perforations of the clamping plate, as the'handle, hooks formed upon the lower and for the purpose set forth. 10 ends of the second named arms, a plate In testimony whereof, I afiix my signaconnected to said arms by the hooks, spurs ture, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
secured upon the inner face of said plate HERBERT HAMPTON. and adapted to pass through a broom When Witnesses:
the upper end thereof is engaged in the L. W. DENNY,
easing, said spurs being adapted to engage G. W. HOWARD.
