BROOM HOLDER I Patented July 25, 1893'.
Z W F J T 1 m v l m z 0 a x m val. C G P x [v z .W m W24 Z w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLI CHRIST, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BROOM-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,033, dated July 25, 1893.
Application filed April 3, 1893. Serial No- 468,862- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLI CHRIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in
the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention refers to that kind of device used for hanging up by the handle all kinds of implements which have handles like brooms and which are commonly known as broom holders, although they are adapted and often purposely designed for hanging up hoes, rakes, carpet sweepers, &c., and I mean to be understood that my invention broadly refers to a holder designed and adapted to these various implements.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the supporting frame, and further in the peculiar construction of the jaws, and further in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 isahorizontal section through the jaws. Fig. 3 is a cross section of one of the jaws, on line w 00.
.A is a wall plate, preferably of ornamental.
design and having suitable means for securing it to the side of the wall.
B is a bracket having pins or rivets 0 formed integral therewith and passing through apertures in the wall plate, being riveted inthe rear side thereof, as shown in Fig. 2. At its lower end this bracket is provided with a forwardly extending plate D, terminating in a.
vertical cross-head E.
F are gripping jaws having a recurvated inner face and provided near their rear ends with the laterally extending lugs G- which form a bifurcation embracing the plate D, the arms being pivoted thereto, by means of pivot pins H.
I are arms extending inwardly from the jaws F, and provided on their inner faces with pins J.
K is a coil spring engaging at each end over the pins J and passing through an aperture L formed in a hub or enlargement M on the lower arm of the bracket B. The inner faces I of the jaws F are provided with a dove-tailed recess N in which is forced asuitable rubber facing O, which projects slightly beyond the faces of the jaws.
The parts being thus constructed their operation is as follows: The tensionof the spring K acts normally to force the jaws toward each other. They are prevented from closing beyond the position shown in Fig. 2, by means of stops P formed near their pivotal point and bearing against the cross-head E. To engage a broom or other article between the jaws, the operator simply brings the handle of the article opposite the jaws and presses it between, when the tension of the spring K will tightly clamp the jaws thereon and hold it in position; to release it he simply draws the article out.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a broom holder the combination with a support having a bracket thereon, outwardly extending jaws pivoted to the bracket, a spring for closing the jaws and an abutment carried by the bracket and interposed between the jaws in front of the pivots thereof for limiting the inward movement of the jaws, substantially as described.
2. Inabroom holder, the combination of the wall plate, the bracket secured on the front face thereof, a plate at the outer end of the bracket jaw, having bifurcations on their inner faces, embracing the sides ofsaid plate and pivoted thereto, rearwardly extending arms on said jaws, the coil spring K extending between the inner end of the arms and guided and supported in an aperture in the base of the bracket, the cross-bar E at the forward end of the plate D, the shoulder P in front of the pivotal points of the arms bearing against said cross-bar, to limit the movement of the arms and an elastic gripping strip held in dovetail grooves on the inner face of the jaws, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLI onmsr.
