Description

G. B. KING. I BROOM HOLDER. j- APPLIOATIOH FILED FEB. 24, 1910.

, EINETEE STATES PATENT SHERRI,
CHARLES E. KING, OF KING, NEBRASKA.
BROOM-HOLDER.
' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan, 17, 1911,
Application filed February 24, 1910.
Serial No. 545,771.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. Kine, a citizen of the United States, residing at King, in the county of Cherry and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for holding the handles of brooms, rakes and similar implements also penholders, pencils, etc., and has for its object the provision of a de vice that is simple in construction and operation, inexpensive in cost of manufacture and that will securely hold the broom handles or other implement.
To this end my invention consists of a device having two spring controlled clamping arms pivotally secured and provided with interengaging gear teeth on their adjacent edges that operate to swing the clamping arms simultaneously, the arms being provided with lugs or projections to engage the handle and pins that ride in segmental slots in the base of the device.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a front view of my improved broom holder, Fig. 2, a rear view, Fig. 3, a top plan view, Fig. d, an end view, and
Fig. 5, a cross section of one of the clamping lugs.
In the drawings-similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
The base 1 of my improved device is adapted to be secured to any suitable upright support by means of threaded or driven fastenings secured in holes 2 therein and is provided with slotted projections or protuberances 3 on its ends.
4 indicates clamping arms pivotally se cured in slotted projections or protuberances 3 by means of pins 5, said arms having their free ends widened and formed with inter meshing segmental gear faces 6 to insure simultaneous swinging of the arms 4 when in use.
Base 1 is provided with two segmental slots 7 substantially describing arcs of circles having for their centers pivot pins 5, and 8 indicates a pin secured to each arm 4t and riding in slots 7 to limit the swinging movement of the arms in assuming a clamping position.
9 indicates lugs or projections formed integral therewith, extending outwardly from the arms at and having their adjacent portions curved inwardly to engage the handle of the broom or other implement while their under and inner surfaces are beveled as shown at 11, so that when inserting the handle in position the upper end is placed under the lugs or projections 9 and by pushing upwardly the arms are swung upwardly to open the space between the lugs to admit the handle which may then be raised to the position desired when clamped and when the upward pressure is released the lugs will clamp the handle, the springs 12, secured to projections 3 tending to force the arms 4 downwardly to hold the lugs in engagement with the handle.
In removing the broom or other implement the handle is pulled outwardly, the curved surface 10 of the lugs admitting of removing the handle and forcing the arms to swing upwardly so as to release the grip on the handle.
18 indicates bearing surfaces of rubber or other yielding material secured to the inner surface of the lugs 9 to add to their efficiency as clamping members and also to prevent scratching or abrading the handle when in a clamped position.
14 indicates hooks formed on the outer ends of pins 5 which may be used to hang up articles if desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A. broom holder comprising a base, integral slotted extensions projecting from said base, clamping arms pivotally secured in the slots in said extensions, segmental slots in the base substantially describing arcs of circles having for their centers the pivots of the clamping arms, pins on the arms and riding in said slots, laterally extending lugs on said arms, said lugs having their adjacent surfaces curved inwardly to engage the broom handle, and their under and inner surfaces beveled, bearing surfaces of yielding material on the inner surfaces of the lugs, and leaf springs secured to the slotted extensions and having their free ends engaging the clamping arms to hold them normally in their lowermost positions.
In testimony whereof I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES E. KING. Vitnesses HARRY V. DOWNING, CHARLES O. JONES.
