SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,515, dated November 22, 1904.

' To all whom, it may concern;

Be it known that LEDWARD V. BODDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canon City, in the county of Fremont and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in clamping and holding devices, and more particularly to a device of this character designed for holding the ordinary photographic cut-out forms which are used in cutting oval or other irregular-shaped prints.

The object of my invention is to provide a holder of this character, which will be simple in construction, durable in use, effective in operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

WVith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully describedfiand particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the holder in its opened position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device in its closed position.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a suitable base, preferably of wood or metal and of a square or rectangular form, as illustrated, and 2 denotes a clamping bar or member, which coacts with said base, to hold a photographic cut-out form A or any similar object between them. Said bar,which is preferably rectangular in cross-section and disposed parallel with one edge of the base, is so mounted that either one of two of its faces 3 and 4 may be swung into contact with the upper side or face of the base. This mounting may be effected in any suitable manner; but I preferably attach said bar to said base by hinges 5, disposed adjacent to each end of the bar, as shown. for a purpose presently explained, and at each of its ends with a handle 7 preferably in th form of a heavy piece of wire or a metal rod bent upon itself, as shown, and having one end driven into one of the ends of the bar and its opposite end secured, as at 8, upon one face of the same. The clamping action of the bar is effected by one or more springs, which may be of any suitable type, but are preferably in the form of loops or coils 9, disposed in recesses 10 at the ends of the base, as shown. Each of said springs has one of its ends secured, as at 11, in one of said recesses and its other end attached, by means of a link or rod 12, to one of the handles 7. It will be seen that the connection of said spring or springs is such that they will hold the bar in either of the two positions to which it may be turned.

The use and operation of the device will be readily seen. When the clamping-bar 2 is turned to its open positionthat is; so that the face 4 engages the top of the basethe form A or other article to be clamped is inserted, as seen in the drawings, in the space formed by the recess 6 in said bar. By simply swinging the bar to the position shown in Fig. 3 the face 3 engages said form and clamps it, with the photographic print to be cut beneath it, down upon the base. The form is thus securely held upon the print and the latter may be cut by the ordinary rotary or wheel cutter which is commonly used for this purpose.

It will be seen that the device is of simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive construction, and that it is very easy to operate, a simple turn of the bar clamping or releasing the form, as desired.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without re-- quiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A holder of the class described, comprising a base, a clamping-bar upon said base adapted to have either one of two of its faces moved into contact with said. base, a clamping means for holding either of said faces of said bar upon said base, substantially as described.

2. A holder of the class described, comprising a base, a clamping-bar upon said base adapted to have either one of two of its faces moved into contact with said base and having a recess in one of said faces to permit of the insertion of an object to be clamped beneath said bar, and means for clamping said bar upon said base, substantially as described.

3. A holder of the class described, comprising a base, a clamping-bar hingedly connected to said base and adapted to have either one of two of its faces swung into contact with said base, said bar having a recess in one of said faces to permit of the insertion of an object to be clamped beneath said face, and a spring for clamping the other of said faces upon said base, substantially as described.

4. A holder of the class described, comprising a base, a clamping-bar hingedly connected to said base and adapted to have either one of two of its faces swung into contact with said base, said bar having a recess in one of said faces to permit of the insertion of an object to be clamped beneath said face, and a spring for holding either of said faces of the ba in contact with said base, substantially as described.

5. A holder of the class described, compris ing a base, a clamping-bar hinged ly connected to said base and adapted to have either one of two of its faces swung into contact with said base, said bar having a recess in one of said faces to permit of the insertion of an object to be clamped beneath said face, a handle at each end of said bar, and springs connecting said base and said handles to clamp said bar upon said base, substantially as described.

6. A holder of the class described comprising a base having recesses in its sides or ends,

a clamping-bar hinged to said base to permit either one of two of its faces to be swung into contact with said base, and having a recess formed in one of said faces, a handle at each end of said bar, a spring secured in each of said recesses, and links connecting said springs and said handles, substantially as described.
