Description
C. A. STEELE April 25, 1950 BOOKHOLDER Patented Apr. 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- 2,505,590 7 Y I BOQKHQLDER 7 Claude Steele, Claremore, Okla. Application M ay 3, 1947, Serial No. 745,818
r 2 Claims;
This invention relates to book holders adapted to hold books, magazines, sheet music, or similar articles, in open position so that the leaves or pages of the book in open position are, held flat in order to provide a ready reference torthe book or the like.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a simple and efficient book page holder which is easy to manufacture yet efficient in its operation and durable in its application.
Another object of this invention is :to provide a book holder which is readily utilized with the back covers of any book or the like, and so constructed with adjustable and movable mean holding the pages of the book in open position in a positive and eflicient manner.
And still another object of this invention is to provide a book holding attachment having a folding construction provided with leaf holding means capable of adjustment to different sizes of books in order to hold the pages of the book in open position at different portions thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be evident from the following detailed description read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book holder shown in conjunction with an open book.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the book holder per se.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the perspective of the folded connecting portion of the body.
Figure 4 is a similar view of the' folded connected portion for the holding arms.
Referring to the drawings in detail and more particularly Figures 1 and 2, the book holder comprises a flat body portion generally indicated at 2, made of any suitable material such as a lightweight metal, pliable plastic, or the like. The body 2 is provided with a pair of projections or extensions 4 which are bent backwards with respect to the body to provide a pair of gripping or clip members. From Figure 1 it will be apparent that the clips 4 are arranged in slightly spaced relationship with the body member 2 in order to be retained or secured to the back cover members 6 of a book, magazine, music sheet, or the like, without interfering with the bound leaves thereof. The upper portion of the body 2 is provided with a centrally disposed flange or extension 8, adapted to be slit along a portion of its transverse axis as at In in order to permit the folding of the opposite ends of the flange 8, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. The folded 2 portions l2 at flange 8 are again folded as at M to provide vertical upright members l6 disposed in adjacent and parallel relationship to each other. Each of the upright members I6 is provided with an aperture l8 in aligned relationship. Although the present device only discloses one aligned aperturein each of the members 16, it will be apparent that the plurality of apertures may be provided in order to permit vertical adjustment for a purpose that will be hereinafter set forth.
A clamp or holding member is adapted to be secured to the body 2 and particularly the upright members It of the flange 8 in a manner as will now be set forth. The clamp member generally indicated at 20 comprises an elongated body 22 shown by dotted lines in Figure 2, which is adapted to be bent backwards in a manner similar to flange 8 as at 24. The member 22 is again bent at 26 to provide perpendicular extending members 28 formed in slightly spaced relationship to each other. The body 22 is provided with a laterally extending projection 30 arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body 22. The extension 30 may be formed with oppositel extending flange members 32, or the cross member 32 may be secured to the extension 30 in any convenient manner such as welding, soldering, or the like. The outer end of the extension 30, and particularly the portion above the cross member 32 as shown in Figure 2, is preferably curved or formed on the arc and curve in order to provide a handle member 34 for a purpose as will be hereinafter set forth.
The integral clamp member comprising the body 22, extension 3!] and cross member 32, is connected to the body 2 by fitting the spaced flanges 28 over the upright members M, and secured thereto by any conventional locking means 35 inserted through aligned apertures 38 in flanges 28 and disposed in alignment with apertures I8. The connection between the members 28 and I4 is sufficiently loose to provide easy movability of the body 22 and cross member 32 with respect to the upright members l4 so that the extension 30 and cross member 32 may be readily moved from an operative to an inoperative position, and vice versa. It will thus be seen that the page holder 2 may be attached to the back covers of a book 6 through the clamp members 4. During the attachment the cross member 32 and body 22 are moved with respect to the flange 8 to substantially upright position as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The pages 36 of the book may be opened to any desired point, and with the book in open position the clamp member 22 is folded or moved toward the open leaves of the book in order to place the cross member in clamping contact therewith. The central disposition of the flange 8 and extension 30 is such to permit the extension 30 to substantially ride in the crevices between the bound leaves or pages 36 of QQbQOkfi Changes; m y bejmade in the 'combinationaind arrangements of parts as heretoforeset-forth in the specification and shown in the drawings, it being understood that any modification in the precise embodiment of the invention maybe,-
made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
