Description
May 18, 1937. M. M. WRIGHT NOTEBOOK HOLDER Filed June 19, 1936 Patented May 18, 1937 UNITED smr PATET OFFEE.
7 Claims.
This invention relates to note-book holders and more particularly to holders or covers adapted to retain a filler, such as a stenographic note-book or a pad of loose sheets.
In my Patent No. 1,845,952 granted February 16, 1932, I disclosed and claimed a note-book holder comprising a front cover, a back cover and a base portion secured by continuous flexible material, the note-book being positioned by means of a resilient clamping device positioned between two sections of the note-book holder.
One object of the present invention is a notebook holder, the construction of which is simpler than that disclosed in my patent.
Another object of the invention is a note-book holder in which may be readily attached and disengaged not only stenographers note-books having the leaves stitched together but also those in which the leaves are secured together by a helical binding wire. In carrying this aspect of the invention into efiect, I provide a clasp member or safety-pin-like member, the free end of which may pass between the leaves of a stenographic or other note-book wherein the leaves are stitched together or which may pass through the helical binding wire of the other type of note-book.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a note-book holder wherein loose leaves may be retained in the form of a pad. Accordingly, I provide a clamping member for loose leaves which shall readily cooperate with and be mounted upon the clasp of the note-book holder and readily disengaged therefrom.
These and other objects of the invention and the means for their attainment will be more apparent from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating one embodiment by which the invention may be realized, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, showing the note-book holder of this invention in horizontally extended position;
Figure 2 is an isometric view showing the positions occupied by the various parts when the note-book is to be supported in reading position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detailed View, in perspective, showing the mounting of the clamp for loose leaves on the note-book holder of this invention;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken in the plane indicated in the line 44 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows and showing the clamp in position upon the clasp;
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the note-book holder in what is probably the best position for taking down dictation; and
Figure 6 is a view in perspective showing the note-book holder in another position to transcribe notes thereon.
In the illustrated embodiment, the note-book holder comprises the three sections 8, it? and 12 of stiff material, such as heavy paper board, forming the front and middle and supporting sections, respectively. Each section is preferably rectangular and the front and supporting or base sections It and i2, respectively, are joined to the middle or back section 8 by flexible sheet material such as a heavy textile of the nature of that ordinarily used as a binding material for books and which may be secured to the proximate ends of adjacent sections by adhesive. Conveniently, strips of the flexible material are secured to corresponding surfaces, respectively, of the sections,
that is, one strip I3 is secured on one side or" the 4 adjacent ends and a second strip M is secured on the opposite sides of adjacent ends as shown. The adjacent ends of the sections 8 and i2 are spaced from one another so that the fabric strips l3-Hl afford a flexible hinge or joint permitting these sections to be folded back upon one another, as shown in Figure 5, to receive the front section it therebetween, while the ends of sections 8 and I0 are spaced still further from one another and jointed by fabric strips l5 and it to receive the clasp 22-48, next to be described.
Midway between the adjacent ends of the front section it and back or middle section 8, a clasp member 2228 is mounted. Preferably, this clasp member comprises a pair of parallel arms formed from a rod or wire bent in U-shape and of material having some degree of inherent resiliency. The extremity of the arm 22 is bent at right angles thereto, as at 26, and again reversely bent to form a hook as illustrated at 28, by which the extremity of the arm 24 may be engaged and from which it may be disengaged when a notebook is adapted to be secured thereto. Thus, a safety-pin-like member is formed. A note-book of the ordinary kind, wherein the leaves are stitched together, may readily be mounted upon this clasp 22-28 by passing the free arm or pin 24 between the leaves and then, of course, engaging the pin with the hook portion 28. Similarly, with a stenographers note-book of the kind illustrated at 30 in Figure 2, wherein the leaves are secured by a helical binding wire 32, the pin member 24 may pass through the helical coil to retain the note-book in position.
Any convenient means may be adapted to secure the clasp member 22-28 to the hinge member i6. For instance, the arm 22 may be passed between the separate pieces or strips of fabric I 5, I 6 and the fabric may be joined upon opposite sides of the back bar 22 as by adhesive or staples or the like, 33.
A pencil holder or the like 34 may be secured to the base or supporting section I2. This pencil holder may take the form of a tubular member of rubber, metal, fibre or the like and may be a split or partially split tube. It may be conveniently secured to the exterior or free end'of the section !2 as by a strip of fabric 35 adhered in suitable manner to the end of the section l2 on the side opposite to that of the clasp -22---28,
' as shown in Figure 1.
This pencil holder serves as a stop for the frontsection l when'the notebook holder is in the reading position shown in Figure 2.
In situations where a pad of loose sheets is to be carried in the note-book holder of this invention, a spring clamp may be provided as shown in Figures 3 and 4.. The pad of loose sheets, illustrated at 36, is held firmly in place between the jaws 38, 39 of a clamp having a spring por tion 40 tending to urge the jaws 38, 39 together and provided with wings or tabs 32 which may be manually grasped and pressed toward one another to cause the separation of the jaws 38, 39. As illustrated, there is mounted on the jaw 39, outwardly or to the rear thereof, a mounting member which is substantially U-shaped in cross section and whereof its reversely bent sleeve portion is formed to receive the pin portion 24. The edge portions 46 have a tendency to lie closely adjacent one another to prevent the disengagement of the receiving sleeve from the pin.
The use and advantages of the note-book holder of this invention is apparent from the foregoing description. Obviously, when the clamp 38-46 is not required, it is removed from the note-book holder.
Various modifications will occur to those skilled in the art in the composition, configuration and disposition of the component elements going to make up the invention as a whole as well as in the selection of features to meet specific conditicns and no limitation is intended by the phraseology of the foregoing description or illustrations in the accompanying drawing, except as indicated in the appended claims.
