RETAINING-CLIP FOR MUSIC-LYRES.

Be it known that I, Gnonen L. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful 1m proveincnts in Retaining-Clips for Music- Lyres, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to music. holders and more particularly an attachment in the form of an adjustable and yielding clip to be easily and cheaply applied to the common and existing forms of music lyres.

The objects of my invention are:

l irst, to construct a retaining clip of the character above described which is capable of being adapted to support and hold music sheets in place while they are being read, particularly orchestral or band music, where there is a current of wind that has a tendency to displace or blow the sheets of music, and thereby avoid the necessity of the player being constantly required to adjust or grab the music after the same has once been placed in position and permit said music to be played without any interruption.

Second, to construct a retaining clip of the character described which is simple in form, requiring a minimum of cost to manufacture, of few parts, easily and quickly applied to all forms of music lyres, negligible in weight, and at all times in position to be quickly adjusted to all sizes of music sheets supported on the music lyre.

Third, toconstruct a retaining clip which is capable of being attached and used in connection with a music lyre, so that it will not mar the appearance of the music holder or interfere with the reading of the entire sheet of music after once adjusted in position.

Fourth, to construct an attachment for music lyres which is capable of being made solely out of wire and does not require special tools to manufacture the same.

Fifth, other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following detailed description of its construction, mode of application and operatlon of the same.

My invention consists of structural characteristics of elements and relative arrangements thereof which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings is the common form of music lyre which usually consists of a support 11, at the upper end of which is securely fastened a plate 12 in the shape of a lyre and to the front ofsaid plate 12 andnear its bottom is secured a Spring-clamp 18, supported on short standards 1-1, 1 1, projecting from the plate 12, and having its bifurcated upper end, 1:) forced against the front side of said plate 12 by a coiled spring 16.

At the center portion of the upper side or end of the lyre or plate 12 is provided'a hole or opening 1'7, or other securing means to which is pivotally connected the improved retaining clip, which comprises the present invention and consists of a short coiled spring 18 having one of or its lower end 19, pivotally connected to said plate 12 by being bent over after having been passed through the opening 17 as shown in Fig. 2.

At the other or upper end 20 of the coiled spring 18 is pivotally attached a clamp 21, made from a single piece of wire and formed with a central V-shaped section 22 connected at its upper ends 23, 23, by means of short bends 24,24, and downwardly extending poi--- tions 25, 25 to a connecting and closing link section 26, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The lower and abutting ends of the central l/shaped section 22 are provided with eyes 27, 27, which are pivotally engaged by the upper end 20 of the coiled spring 18 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The operation of the invention is as follows: The parts being in position shown in Fig. 3, when it is desired to clamp or support music in the holder, the bifurcated end 15 of the spring-pressed clamp 13 is raised from the plate or lyre 12 against the action of the coil spring 16, the music sheet or sheets S,

with the usual stiff back or cover B, are then adjusted so that the center sections of the lower portion of the back or cover B, and sheets S, are interposed between the separated end 15 of the clamp 13 and plate or lyre 12, and the lower edges of the music sheets S, and cover B, rest on the projecting standards 14, 14, when the spring-pressed clamp 13 is released, thereby gripping and holding the lower portion of the sheets S, against the board B, and forcing the board B, against the front of the plate or lyre 12 as shown in Fig. 1.

In order toapply the retaining clip 21 to the upper portion of the music sheets S, after being supported by the lyre 12 and clamp 13 as just described, all that is necessary is to grip by the fingers the center section of the link portion 26, of the clip 21, and pull upwardly againstthe action of the coil spring 18'until said link section 26 is centrally located above the top edges of the board or back B and sheets S, and gradually permitting the spring 18 to draw said section 26 over the front side of the exposed music sheet until the short bends 24, 24 of said clip 21 rests on the top edges of the music sheets S, and board B, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the clip 21 is released and the sheet or sheets of music will not only be held at their lower portions but firmly and immovably clamped at the major portion of theirupper edges, thereby insuring and preventing any possibility of said sheets from being displaced due to jarring of'said holder while parading, or being blown away during a gale or by an unexpected gust of wind.

\Vhen it is desired to turn or remove the sheet or sheets S, of music from holder, all that is necessary is to grip the link portion 26 at the same place and manner as hereto fore explained and pull upwardly against the action of the spring 18, until said link portion is free from the sheets S, and back B, and permit the clip 21 to assume the de pending position shown in Fig. 3, and hence be in sucha location as to prevent any interference in adjusting or removing the sheets of music and at the same time there being no possibility of said clip 21 being displaced, lost or injured when not in use.

From the foregoing disclosure of the construction, mode of operation and use of applicants attachment, it will be seen that all the objects and advantages recited in the statement of invention are fully and efficiently carried out with a minimum of parts and expense.

What I claim is As an article of manufacture a retaining clip for attachment to a music lyre or sup port comprising a resilient member having at one of its ends means for pivotally attaching it to a music lyre or support and its other end provided with a pivoted and extended clip made from a single piece of wire bent to form an extended central V-shaped section having short overhanging flexible bends at each of its separated or divergent ends, and a link connected with the bends of the separated or divergent ends of said V-shaped sec tion and so constructed and arranged as to enable the bonds to flexibly pass over the top edge and said link clamp an extended upper portion of a music sheet supported and held at its lower section by the music lyre or sup port.
