Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
Application filed September 12, 1917. Serial No. 191,001.
To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEVI W. NAcn and EDGAR J. FINK, citizens of the United States, residing at Hanover, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Miter Boxes, of which specification.
This invention relates to improvements in miter boxes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved miter box having an adjustable saw guide which may be readily arranged and secured at any desired angle, to enable any desired saw out to be made; another object of the invention being to provide an improved miter box which embodies meanstor clamping the work and holding the same securely while being sawed; a further object being to provide an improved miter box of this character which is cheap and simple in construction, is strong and durable, which is very compact and which can be readily arranged for use on a work bench or other like support.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan of a miter box constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 4-4: of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detailed elevation of the saw guide and its segment base.
Fig. 6 is a detailed sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of our improved miter box.
2 In the embodiment of our invention we provide a base box 1 which is open on the under side and comprises a top 2 and vertical side walls 3. The base box is adapted to be secured on a work bench or the like and to be arranged over the work as shown, a board, constituting the work, being indicated at a. The base box is open at the ends so that the work can be arranged therein and moved longitudinally.
To enable the base box to be secured on the bench the same 1s provided with points the following is a,
t which are pivotally secured on the outer sides of the .walls 3 by means of screws 5 and which can be arranged in vertical position, to extend below the walls and in the bench or can be turned upwardly against the wall out of the way. When the points are in bench engaging position they are se-' cured to the walls by screws 6 in addition to the pivot screws 5. The walls of the base box are also provided with eyes 7 which projeet outwardly therefrom and through which nails or the like, as at 8, may be driven into the bench. I
One end of the top of the base box projects longitudinally beyond the side walls as at 10 and is mitered on opposite sides as at 11. A saw guide 12 is provided on one side with a semi-circular or segment base portion 13 which bears on the extension 10 and is pivoted as at 14, the pivot 14 being here shown as a bolt which also secures the outer end of an arm 15. The said arm bears on the segmental base of the saw guide and the inner end of the said arm bears directly on the top of the base box as at 16 and is secured thereto as by means of screws 17. The segmental base of the saw guide is provided with a scale 18 indicating degrees and is also provided at suitable points with spaced openings 19. A clamping screw 20 extends through the arm 15 and may be caused to bear against the segmental base of the saw guide to secure the saw guide in adjusted position. A dog 21 is pivotally connected to the inner end of the arm 15 as at 22 and is provided at its outer end with a point 23 which operates in an opening 24 in the arm and may be engaged in any one of the openings 19 of the saw guide to secure the latter at any desired adjusted position. A spring 25 is arranged on the pivot 22 and with its arms or ends respectively engaging the dog and the top of the base box, the said spring exerting its tension to nor mally hold the dog in engaged position.
The saw guide with its segmental base is made of a single piece of sheet or plate metal. and comprises an inverted U-shaped portion 26 the arms 27, 28 of which are united at their upper ends by diametrically enlarged eyes 29 as shown. The eyes constitute springs which tend to move the arms 27, 28 toward each other to cause the arms to bear snugly against opposite sides of the saw and to hold the latter straight while being used to make it cut. The arms of the frictionally engage the saw.
