Be it known that l, ALLEN B. Mounts, a resident of Marshalltown, in the county of )lai-shall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention designs to provide an improved miter-box of simple and compact construction; ;further, to provide an improved device of this character which can be readily adjusted for cuts of different angles and can be folded for convenience in packing or trans portation when not in use, and, further, to provide an improved miter-box.
The invention consists of the several novel features of construction hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a ruiter-box embodyingl the preferred form of the invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view, parts being' shown in position for a right-angle cut. Fig. 3 is a similar view, parts being' shown in folded position. Fig. a is a view in vertical section on line e 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line of Fig. 1L.
Themiter-box embodies a frame or support A, which comprises a pair of members n fr, secured together by a bolt or rivet a". Between said members a space is formed in which a saw is guided. Each of said members comprises a base-bar U, an upright u?, and a. top bar a, which are preferably integrally formed. A side guide B is pivotally secured to each member of the support A and on opposite sides of said support, respectively. Guides B are pivotally sustained by a top lug and a bottom lug /1 of support A and pivotbolts about which the side guides can be adjusted into any desired angle with respect to the saw-guide to vary the angle of the cut. The side guides are equidistantly adjusted about their respective pivots, so that like angle-cuts will be made on both strips of a joint. Guides B are held in assigned position with respect to the saw-guide by a pair of links C C, each of which has one end pivoted at n to the lower edge of one of the guides B and its other end pivoted to a connecting-stud c', which is secured to an adjustable block c2. Said block is held between the base-bars of the saw-guide and has its sides grooved, as at c5, to receive the correspondingly-shaped inner edges of said bars, so the blocks will be held against vertical displacement. Said block is movable longitudinally between the basebars, and a clampscrew l.) is adapted to force bars u. together, so block c2 will be securely clamped in assigned position therebetween. Said clamp-screw extends through an ear a" of each base-bar and is provided with a screwthread engaging a corresponding thread in one of said ears. By adjustment of block c the side guides will be equidistantly shifted with respect to thc saw-guide, so the angle of the cut will always be one-half of the angle of the side guides. The clamp holds the block in assigned position.
A bottom or rest E is pivotally connected to each of the side guides. Each bottom has secured to each of its end guides a strap e. Pivot-s c extend through projecting lugs of side guides B and one of the straps, and thus connect the side guides and the rests. Each bottom support or rest being' hinged to the side guides is adjustable therewith and can furthermore be snugly folded into parallel relation with respect to the guides, as shown in Fig. 3, for convenience in transportation, and so the device can be conveniently placed ina tool-chest when not in use. l.`l1e rests are arranged so they will abut against basebar of the Vframe and position the side supports for a right-angle cut.
'hen the device is to be used, the angle whereinto two strips are to lit is lirst measured by a protractor or other suitable tool. The side strips are then placed into position to correspond to the measured angle and are secured in assigned position by clamp-screw l). The strip or board to be cut is then placed into the corner between the rest and the side guides at one side of the saw-guide. lhe cut then made by the saw will be onehalf of the desired angle and connect t0 form a truc miter-joint. The other strip of a joint is then placed into the other support. Thus each of the strips will be cut to form a true ruiter-joint. Each rest is cut away, as at e", to leave the links free Vfor adjustment and so the bottom can properly rest on a iixed support.
The device has several important advantages. lt is simple in construction, can be produced at a low cost, and can be folded into small compass for convenience when not in use. The folding rests make it possible to easily position the board to be cut and to operate the device.

restricted to the precise details shown and described, since these can be modified by the skilled mechanic without departing' from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a miter-box the combination with a support and saw-guide of a side guide pivotally connected to the support and laterally adjustable to vary its angular relation with respect to the guide, and a rest pivotally sustained to swing vertically and be folded alongside of the side guide.
2. In a miter-boX the combination with a support and saw-guide of a side guide pivotally connected to the support and laterally adjustable to vary its angular relation with respect to the guide, a'rest pivoted to the side guide, and an adjustable connection between the side guide and the support, for holding the guide in assigned position.
and a rest hinged to each of the side guides to swing into substantially parallel relation `with respect to the side guide.
6. In a miter-boX the combination with a support, comprising a pair of bars, and a sawguide of a pair of side guides adjustably connected to the support, a block held between said bars, a link connection between the block and each of the side guides and means for forcing the bars together to hold the block in assigned position.
7 The combination of a frame or support, comprising a pair of members, each comprising a base-bar, an upright, and a top bar, a saw-guide being formed therebetween,- a side guide pivoted to the frame and a resthinged to the side guide.
