SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,119, dated May 17, 18187.

To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that. I, JOEL T. ORIswELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Collamer, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVIitering-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mitering-machines; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my iuvention,in which-- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my device. Fig. 21s a top viewof thesame. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 is a side view, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail views.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the base or platform of the machine, which is hinged at a to a crossstrip, 1), to the upper surface of which is hinged two standards, 0 c, that are connected at their upper ends by a lever, d, which is pivoted to the standard c,and the opposite end hasa book, 0, which engages a bolt,'f, in the standard 0, whereby the two standards are coupled to one another and are held parallel vertically. These standards are provided with vertical kerfs g, which are designed to receive the saw, and each has adjustable guide-strips 71, having horizontal slotsz' for set-screws j, whereby the kerf in each standard can be widened or made narrow for different saws, and can be removed for trimming or smoothing. their edges. Upper wings, r, are hinged at 8 to the top of the movable plate, and the same have curved arms t secured to it, which pass through loops u on the upper end of a fixed arm, a, secured to the upper face of the movable plate, and is provided witha thumb-screw, 20, which is designed to hold the movable wing r in a fixed position when set for miterin These wings are each provided with projecting armsw, which are provided with kerfs g at their upper ends, designed to receive a bar, 2, of a clamp, a, which consists of two arms, I), at the lower end of one of which is ascrew, d, that serves to tighten the board or material to the wing and hold it fast while sawinga miter.
To the under side of the hinged platforms are secured curved arms 0 c, which pass through loop on the end of the curvedarms ff, secured to the cross picce of the frame. Ath umbscrew,a ,servcs to bindthe two curved arms to one another when said platform is set at an angle to the cross-bar or when the same is in a horizontal position. These arms are held in any fixed position by the thumbscrew, which passes through the loop, and the point thereof pressing against the arms fixed to the cross piece. This arrangement allows the hinged platform to be adjusted to different po sitions in cutting miters, and can beheld firmly by the set-screw, and the various parts are so arranged to allow adj uslments to any desired angle, and are also provided with gage-marks,
whereby the parts can be set and atthe same timeheld in the proper relation to one another. It will be seen that the machine herein described is capable of being adjusted to almost any angle, and the different gages will allow the different adjustable portions to be set for cutting miters for wagolrseats, window-frames,' and also for cutting straight edges, and will hold material in position while the different sawed portions are being nailed, screwed, or glued together, and the standard 0 can be readily thrown back in order to allow the operator to have access to the material while securing the parts together; and it will be further seen that but one operator is required to operate the machine, as the clampingirons hold the material firmly while being secured, and any desired angles can be cut for various purposes, and at the same time it is simple in construction, not liable to get out of order, and cheap to manufacture.
Having described my device, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a mitcringmachine, the standards IOO hinged to the intermediate portion, 7), of the table, and provided with the adj ustable guidestrips h h and pivoted hook d, in combination with the hinged platform A, plate m, pivoted to said platform, wings r, hinged to said plate, and arms 2; t,secured,respectively,to the wings and plate by the thumb-screw engaging said arms, as shown, the whole as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a mitering-machine, the combination of the main body portion, the swinging or pivoteCl plate and hinged wing r,and curved arm tand arm '0, provided with the screw w, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a mitering-machine, the combination, with the hinged platform provided with the slot k, the plate m, pivoted thereto, having the bolt to engage said slot, wings 1, hinged to said plate, and having the arm provided with thekerf, of the clamp a, consisting of the arms I) b, cross-piece z, and screw d, said piece adapted to engage the kerfy in the arm as, the hinged standards 0 0, having the guide-strips h h, kerf g, and pivoted hook (I, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a miteringmachine, the platform pro-' vided with legs and composed of two hinged sections and an intermediate section, b, secured and held in different positions by means of the curved arms 0 f, engaging one another and secured in position by the set-screw a in combination with the standards 0 0', plates m, and wings r r, constructed substantially as described.
5. The mitering-machine herein described, consisting of the platform composed of hinged sections, the plates constructed as shown and pivoted to the upper surface thereof, and provided with the curved arms 11, having loops to and screw w, the hinged wings connected to said plates and provided with the curved arms t, extension 00, having the kerf y, the hinged standards having the adjustable guide-strips and the connecting-hook, and the parts of the JOEL T. ORISWELL.
