WORK-I-ICIJCDER FOR BENCH-VISES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed February 4, 1914. Serial No. 816,406.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ScoT'r C. WALTERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Green and State of l/Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Work-Holders for Bench-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved Work holder for use in connection with a bench vise for holding work, such as a bolt, for threading or for other purposes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is connected to a bench vise and may be arranged in position for use or readily turned out of the way when not desired for use, and by means of which work, such for instance as a bolt, may be firmly clamped by the vise against all possibility of turning or slipping.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of a work holder constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same attached-toand for use in connection with a bench vise and also showing the work holder, in dotted lines, arranged to one side of the vise, out of the way. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
For the purposes of this specification a bench vise of usual construction is here shown, comprising a pair of jaws l2 which are pivotally connected together as at 3, a screw 4 being provided for closing and opening the jaws, the screw having a handle bar 5.
In accordance with my invention I provide a work holder 6 which comprises a pair of members 78 which are respectively arranged and constructed to be fitted on the upper sides of the vise jaws, the said members of the work holder being respectively provided, on their opposing sides, with depending flanges 910 which are arranged between the vise jaws. In the opposing sides of the work holder members are openings 11, each of the said openings being partly formed in each of the said members. Any suitable number of the said openings may be provided and they may be of any suitable shape. One of them is here shown as substantially cylindrical and the others are shown as rectangular in cross section and adapted to engage the rectangular portions of bolts or other work, indicated at a to hold the same firmly between the members and against turning.
The member 7 is provided with a pair of supporting guides 12 which are here shown as parallel rods extending from the work engaging side of said member and passing through openings in the member 8 so that the latter member is connected to the member 7 for movement toward and from the same. The supporting guides have heads or stops 14 at their outer ends to limit the extent of movement of the member 8 and pre vent said member 8 from being casually detached from said supporting guides.
A bracket band 15 extends around and is secured to the neck of the jaw l of the vise and to this bracket band is pivotally connected as. at 16 the lower end of a link 17 The upper end of this link is arranged in a recess 18 in the outer side of the member 7 and is pivotally connected to said member by means of a pivot rod or pin 19. By this construction and arrangement or" devices the work holder, is connected to the vise so that it may be arranged with the opposing sides of its members between the vise jaws, for use and the work holder, may be also, when not in use, be readily swung to one side of the bench vise out of the way.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In combination with a bench vise comprising a pair of jaws and means to move them toward and from each other, a work holder comprising a pair of members adapted to be fitted on and between the opposing sides of vise jaws, said' members being formed with work receiving openings in their opposing sides, and means connecting I a 1 over and placed on or tojbe removed from the jaws. H d a In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, SCOTT o. WALTER-S. Witnesses T. M. CARi/ER, I 'J. T. GRAvENoR.
the said work holder members together for movement of said members toward and from eachother, an attaching member secured to one of the 'Vise'jaws and a link having one end pivotally connected to said attaching member and having the other end pivotally connected to one member of the work holder, and adapting the work holder to be swung Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, D. C.
