UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARIAN B. BABB, OF OASSVILLE, MISSOURI.
WOODWORKERS VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,314, dated November 23, 1897.
Application filed March 10, 1897. Serial No. 626,785. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, MARIAN B. BABB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oassville, in the county of Barry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WorkBenches and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to work-benches; and the object of the invention is to provide a work-bench with an improved spring-controlled vise-jaw operated by a foot-lever.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved novel means of connecting the footelever to the vise-jaw, whereby the play of the latter may be adjusted as desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a work-bench, partly broken away, showing my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a section on the line co m, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout both figures of the drawings.
The work-bench has a suitable top 1, sides 2, and supporting- legs 3 and 3, the latter being set inward and out of line with the leg 3, and has pivoted at 4 a foot-lever 5, the free end of which has a plate or projection 6 to engage the teeth of a rack-bar 7, secured to the side of said leg 3. Pivoted to the leg 3, upon an adjustable lever 8,'is the arm 9 of the clamping or vise jaw 10, which is adapted to be opened by a plate-spring 11-, secured to the leg 3, with its free end intermediate the said leg 3 and arm 9. A set-screw 12 is operated through the leg 3 to adjust the tension of the spring 11.
The vise-arm 9 has one end of a rope 13 secured to it at 7 said rope passing over a pulley or sheave 14 in the leg 3 to a turnbuckle 15, which has a screw-stem 14 pro vided with wings 16, forming a fork pivoted to the foot-lever near the pivoted end of the latter. The turnbuckle may be moved upon its screw-stem to limit the movement of the vise-jaw and the set-screw 12 operated to make the spring have a greater or less pressure on said jaw.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a work-bench having suitable legs, of a vise-jaw pivoted to one of said legs, a spring, a rack-bar, and a pulley, secured to said leg, a foot-lever having a plate or projection to engage the rack-bar and pivoted in the other of said legs, a turnbuckle, a screw-stem having a forked end secured to the foot-lever, and a rope connected to the turnbuckle, at one end, the other end passing over the said pulley and secured to the vise-jaw, as set forth.
2. The combination with a work-bench having suitable legs, one of which being offset, of a vise-jaw, a spring, a rack-bar, a pulley, and a set-screw upon the leg to which the vise-jaw is pivoted, a foot-lever having a plate to engage the said rack-bar and pivoted to the said oifset leg, a screw-stem having a fork secured to the said foot-lever, arope secured to the vise-jaw, and a turnbuckle connecting the said stem with the rope, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARIAN B. BABB.
Witnesses:
