WILLIAM FLETCHER HUNTER, or ARGATA, camroama, AssIeIvoRoF ONE-HALF TO LOUIS c. EVERDING, or ARCATA, CALIFORNIA.
TOOL.
rational.
Application filed July 2,
To all whom it may cancer-21,:
lie it known that l, VViLLiAii Fnn'roi-inn HUNTER, a citizen of the United. States, residing at arcata, in the county of Plumboldt and State of California. have invented a new and useful Tool, of which the following is specification.
The present lllTQDtlOll relates to rises and more particularly to portable vises to be employed in wood working.
It is therefore the primary object of the invention to provide a vise of this character having means to permit the same to be readily and easily clamped to any stationary object, such as the studding or rafters of a building, in a manner to secure the vise against displacement.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means associated with one end of the vise to adapt the vise for various usages.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a vise constructed, in accordance with the present invention, showing the movable jaw removed.
Figure 2 illustrates a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 illustrates a front elevational View of one of the securing members.
Figure 4- illustrates a fragmental side elevational view of a saw set attachment.
Figure 5 illustrates a plan view of the same; and
- Figure 6 illustrates an end view.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body or supporting arm of the vise, which is pro vided with the integral arms 6 and 7, the arm 6 being provided with a serrated surface, to bite into the support to which the device is secured.
The opposed arm 7, is provided with a Specification of Letters Patent. P t ted M r, 21, 1922 1920. Serial No. 393,508.'
suitable threaded opening to accommodate the threaded shank 9 of the movable jaw shank 14 of the head 15 th'at has provided in one surface thereof, a plurality of intersect-' ing notches 16, for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described, there being provided a winged nut 17 operating on the shank 1% by means of which the head 15 may be secured within the opening 18. Intersecting the opening 13, is a transversely extending opening 13 adapted to accommodate the shank 14, so that the head 15' may be disposed at ri ht angles to the position as indicated by *igure 1 of the drawings.
As shown, by Figure 1 of the drawings, the clamp 18 is supported by the vise, and which clamp is formed with a. pair of spaced ears 19 and 20, which grasp the head 21 formed on one end of the shank 22 that is provided with ribs 28, adapted to be positioned in the notches 16, of the head 15, so that rotary movement between the heads 15 and 21 is prevented.
In operation, the shank 22 is adapted to be positioned in the opening 24 formed in the head 15, the coiled spring 25 which encircles a portion of the shank 22, and which is held thereon by means of the cotter pin 26, being for the purpose of urging the ribs 23 into predetermined notches 16 of the head 15.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that by moving the shank against the tension of the spring 25, the clamp 18 and its shank may be adjusted to unlimited angles. In order that the ears 19 and 20 will be clamped to the head 21, the bolt 27 is provided, on which bolt operates the nut 28.
As shown by Figures 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings, a novel form of saw supporting vise is provided, which includes a pair of relatively long opposed jaws 29 and 30 having right angled ends 31 and 32 whichare hingedly' connected as by means of the pivot pin 33 extending through suitable registering openings in the ears 35, there being provided a sprin member 36 including the pin 33, the ends t ereof being anchored in openings formed in the right angled ends 31 to normally urge the upper portions of the right angled ends together.
The right angled ends 31 and 32 are cut away 'as at 37, and are provided with inclined walls 38 adapted to cooperate with the wedge-shaped portion of the lever 39 which is pivotally supported between the ends 31 and 32, so that when lever 39 is moved upward it forces the upper extremities of right angled ends 31 and 32 apart,
bringing the lower portions or jaws 29 and together to clamp a saw or similar tool. A laterally extending arm 40, forms a part of the jaw 29, and this arm 40, carries the shank 41, extending downwardly therefrom, which shank is threaded as at 42 to receive the nut 43 for securing the shank 41 in the opening 24 of the head 15, when the deviceis tobe employed as a saw supporting V1S6.. I
In view of the foregoing description, a further detail description of the operation of the device is believed unnecessary.
What I claim is i In a device of the character described, a body portion having clamping means at one end thereof. and openings at the other end, a shank adjustable in said openings, and a Wing nut for holding said shank in position, a notched head on afore mentioned shank and having a central opening therein, a shank positioned in said central opening, a ribbed head on said shank, a spring for holding said ribbed head in contact with afore mentioned notched head, and clamp ing means pivotally mounted on atore mentioned ribbed head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM FLETCHER HUNTER.
Witnesses KATHINKA EVERDING, LOIS E. EVERDING.
