WRENCH.
T aZZ w from it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN J. FnARo, a citizen of the United States, resldmg at Brightwood, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and has for an object the provision of a wrench which is capable of use both as a monkey wrench and a pipe wrench.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character which includes novel means for mounting and guiding the movable jaw, whereby the wrench may be quickly and easily adjusted for use, the construction providing a simple,
efficient, and compact tool which may be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the casting which forms the handle and a part of the wrench frame.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the shank and the jaws carried thereby.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the combined frame connecting member and shank guide.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the pivoted jaw which forms a part of the pipe wrench.
Referring to the drawin s in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a casting which includes a handle 11 and a frame 12, the latter extending from the handle and comprising spaced parallel members or arms 13 and 14. The arm 14 is relatively long and terminates at its outer end in a stationary jaw 15 which forms a part of a monkey wrench.
The arms 13 and 14 are connected by a member 16, one end of which is bifurcated to provide spaced plates 17 which engage upon opposite sides of the arms 14 and are seemed to th a d by ns at r ve I sp cifi i n e m Patented Nov. 1, 1921. Application filed its 151921. Serial No. 478,614. I, I i
ing and between the arms 13 and 14 is'a shank 23. The outer end of this shank carries a aw 24 which cooperates with the jaw 15 and forms the movable jaw of the monkey wrench. Extending oppositely from the shank 23 is a j aw 25, which is roughened or serrated asv shown at 26 and provides one aw of a pipe wrench. The opposite jaw of the pipe wrench is indicated at 27 and this jaw is located within the opening 19 of the member 16 and is secured upon the pivot 21. The pivoted jaw 27 is preferably inclined with respect to the jaw 26 and is roughened or serrated as shown at 28 for cooperation with the jaw 25. A spring 29 has one end secured to the jaw 27 and its opposite end bearing against one wall of the opening 19 and acts to normally force the free end of the jaw 27 downward. This downward movement is limited by the outer wall of the opening 19.
In order to adjust the jaws 24 and 25 with respect to the aws 15 and 21 the shank 23 is threaded as shown at 30 and these threads engage an adjusting nut 31 which operates within a transverse opening 32 provided in the member 16. The outer periphery of the nut 31 is roughened or serrated so as to pro vide a convenient means for rotating the same. Thus, when the nut is operated the jaws 24 and 25 will be moved with respect to the jaws l5 and27, the direction of movement depending upon the direction of rotation of the nut. r
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is.
erating with one of the shank-carr ed jaws,
a pivotally movable jaw secured to the other arm and operating Within the transverse member, and means for operating the shank to adjust the jaws.
2. A Wrench comprlsmg a frame including spaced parallel arms and a handle extending from said arms, a transverse member connecting said arms, a shank slidable V in said member between the arms. oppositely extending jaws carried by the shank,
a jaw carried by one of the arms and cooperating With one of the shanlrcarried jaws, a pivotally movable jaw secured to the other arm and operating Within the transverse member, and means common to both jaws for adjusting the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix'mv signature.
