CLOTHESLINE SUPPORT Filed July 23 1923 Patented Aug. 19, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. GEE, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'IO ETHEL A. JONES, F ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
CLOTHESLINE SUPPORT.
Application filed July 23, 1923. Serial No. 653,285.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. GEE, a citizen of the United. States, residing at El mira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Thi invention relates to clothes line supports, and the general object of the inven tion is to provide a support or clothes line pole which is so constructed that it may be adjusted to increase or decrease its total length and which is further so constructed that the support or pole may be readily clamped on the clothes line or as readily re leased therefrom.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
, My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clothes line support constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same but showing the jaws closed and the support in use;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the wear plate 23.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that the clothes line support consists of two sections and 11, these sections overlapping each other. Attached to the section 10 at its upper end is a U-shaped guide 12 through which the section 11 passes, and attached to the lower end of the section 11 and loosely surrounding the section 10 is a U-shaped guide 13. Through the rear end of this guide passes a set screw 14 whereby the section 11 may be held in adjusted relation to the section 10. The lower end of the section 10 is shod with a sharp pointed metal shoe 15.
The upper end of the section 11 is pointed and has rigidly mounted thereon a jaw 16, and pivotally mounted upon the shank of this jaw is an opposed jaw 17 having a handle portion 18 extending out therefrom. Pivotally connected to this handle portion is a rod 19 which at its lower end is connected to the short arm 20 of a bell crank lever which is pivoted between ears 21 attached to the lower end of the section 11. This bell crank lever has a long arm or handle 22 whereby it may be operated It will be obvious that by turning this handle 22 downward that the jaws will be closed, and it will be further obvious that when the handle is turned all the way downward the lower end of the rod 19 will be projected past the pivotal center of the bell crank lever on the cars 21 so that the jaws will be held closed, and that when the handle 22 is shifted upward the jaws will be opened. These jaws will clamp the clothes line so that the clothes pole or support cannot become detached therefrom.
Obviously the two sections 10 and 11 may be adjusted for length so as to suit higher or lower clothes lines and to hold the clothes line in any raised position. Preferably a wear plate 28 is disposed between the set screw 14 and the face of the section 10, this wear plate 23 having ears 24 adapted to embrace the U-shaped guide or yoke 13 so that this wear plate cannot become lost. This Prevents the section 10, which is preferably made of wood, from being indented by the set screw.
The utility of this device will be obvious from what has gone before.
I claim A clothes line support of the character described comprising two sections having sliding engagement with each other. means for holding the sections in any longitudinally adjusted position, a fixed jaw mounted upon the upper end of the uppermost section, a pivoted jaw coacting with the first named jaw and having an extension or hair dle, a rod pivoted to the handle and extend ing downward along the second named section, and a lever pivoted to the lower end of the second named section and operatively connected to said rod whereby the jaws may be closed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alfiX my signature.
CHARLES A. GEE.
