UNITED STATES JOHN UMP HREYS, 6F oAs rnn; YOMING.
communion roon.
Application filed May 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN HUMPHRETS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at.
inner face and accordingly serves as a shear Casper, in the county of Natrona and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 7 I
This invention relates to combination tools and more particularly to a device of this character especially intended for use in splicing wire 1 and in serving pipe, tool handles and the like with wire.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character'which is extremely simple in itsconstruction and arrangement, which may be very cheaply produced and which will be durable and" eflicient in service. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having means for holding wire while serving a tool or the like, the holding means being such that the tension of the wire may be readily regulated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character having means for holding and guiding two wires while splicing the same. I a
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illus tration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein a Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination tool constructed in accordance with my invention; v
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing one side of the head of the tool; a v Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; V
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the tool in use for serving;
Figure 5 is a similar View showing the tool in use for splicing;
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the tool head from that shown in Figure 2, parts being broken away and Figure 7 is a section on the line 7 7 of V Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numerals 10 and 11 indicate tool sections, thetool section 10 being provided witha pivot 12 and the section 11 having a flanged extension 13' at bne side 1923. Serial No. 636,120.
thereof rotatably engaging the pivot. This flange has a sliding engagement against the side face of the section 10, as at 14, with its faces of which are serrated and which com- 7 bins to form jaws" for holding roundarticles such as pipe or the like. I
The rear ends of the members l0 and 11 are reduced and form handle portions '10 and 11, the extremity "of the handle portion 1O being bent toward the handle portion 11, as 1ndic ated at 18, to provide a flang'e. The adjacent face of the handle portion-11 has pivoted thereto, as at 19, a
hook member 20 interchangeably engageable in openings 21 formed in this flange for a purpose presently toappear. The flange is provided with a further opening 22 for guiding wire while the device is being employed as a serving tool. The end portion of the handle 11 is flattened to form a screw driver point, as indicated at 23. At the opposite side of the pivot point from the handle members the member 10 is offset, as indicated at 24, and formed to provide a hook the end of which is provided with a'claw 25. The offsetting of the section 10 is toward that side thereof which is abutted by the section 11, and that face of the hook next adjacent'the section 11 is provided with an outstanding flange 26 overlying the section '10 in spaced relation thereto andcombining therewith to form a guiding channel 27. Through the section "10 an opening 28 is formed connecting the face of the section 10 next adjacent the section 11 with the interior of the hook 24. The sections 10 and 11 are of the same width and the section 11 is provided upon the pivoted end thereof and at the opposite side thereof from the fiange 13 with an outstanding lug29, the face of which neat adjacent the hook 24 has formed therein a V groove 30; 'The outer rfac'e of the hook 2 4: is preferably provided with a hammer pawl 31'. v
. the handle member. 11' is then engaged in.
one of the openings21, the openings selected being that which will cause the jaw. faces to. come together upon the wire with sufii. cient force to necessitate a desired tension being applied to the wire to draw the same through these jaw faces. The tool is, then rotated about the member to be served inthe direction .of the arrowin F i re 4. Attention is directed to the fact that during this operation the tension of the wire tends to maintainthe member being served in posi-' f tion in the concavity of the hook and] ac- .cordingly the operators attention maybe entirely given to observation ofthe serving complished. a I
When the device is. employed for splicing the adjacent ends of two wires, the wires are overlapped and maintained inparallel position byengaging. a shear or pliers therewith, 1
as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 5 at P. With the wires so held the short end S of one wire is bent upwardly at right angles to the remaining wire and this wire is then engaged in the channel 27 formed by the i jaw section 10 and the flange 26. The upbent end S is then engaged in the groove 30 of the lug 29 and the tool rotated about the wire within the channel 27 as a center and in the direction of the arrow in Figure 5.
.This rotation will cause the short end S tov .be wound about the wire within the channel,
the tool will be obvious. It will be readily seen that the same maybeemployed as a .tack puller, screw driver, hammer, pipe wrench or cutting pliers, as may be desired.
It will further be seen that these devices have been so combined as to provide a very compact tool and one which may be very cheaply produced. It will, of course, be understood that certain changesand modifications are possible in the structure thereof and I accordingly do not limit myself to .this specific arrangement hereinbefore set ,pivotally connected members formed adja-. cent their pivot to provideclainping jaws,
forth except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim a i 1. In adevice of the type described, two
