lie it known that 1, DAVID H. ROYER, a citizen of the United States, residing near the town of Hartville, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Screw-Holder for Screw- Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to devices for holding screws on screw drivers so that the same may be properly started in places or positions where it is impossible to hold the screw with the hand, and especially to a simple form of such. devices such as will hereinafter be fully described.
The objects of the invention are to generally improve devices of the character men tioned and to provide a screw holder for screw drivers which may be temporarily ap plied to any ordinary screw driver without making any change in the construction of the screw driver bit and which may be readily and quickly removed from the screw driver when it is not needed.
Further objects are to provide a. device of the character described which may be stamped from sheet metal and thus be both easily and cheaply made, and which will be effective and convenient in use.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide means whereby different sized screws may be held without changing the construction of the device.
These objects, together with other objects apparent to those skilled in the art may be attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although the invention may be embodied in other forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The holder consists primarily of two members 1 and 2 which are substantially of the form and as shown their screw holding ends are provided with the screw holding aws 3, said jaws being inclined downward and toward each other.
To one of the screw holding members is attached by means of the screw 4t or its equivalent the yoke 5, the opposite end of the yoke being provided with the flanges 6 to which flanges is pivotally attached the cam lever 7, both the members 1 and 2 are embraced by the yoke 5 and are slidably coupled together at their top or upper ends by means of the slotted flanges 8 and the T- heads 9, each memberbeing provided with one slotted flange and one T-head and in order to couple the members together they should be brought at substantially right angles to each other at which time the T heads will pass through the slots 10. The object and purpose of slidably connecting the members together is to provide adjustment for different sized screws and for the proper clamping of the screws by the jaws 3.
For the purpose of guiding the screw driver or bit so as to properly seat the same in the head of the screw the guide flanges 11 are provided, said guide flanges being bent or formed upon the members 1 and 2. In practice I prefer to form the holder from suitable bendable material. In order to provide for the further proper clamping of the screw heads by the jaws 3 they should be provided with the notches 13. For the purpose of providing means for moving the members 1 and 2 to and from each other for any purpose they are each provided with the short handles 14 which are extended upward a short distance as best illustrated in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that the relative movement of the members 1 and 2 should be limited to a certain extent by means of which a holder can be produced for different sized screws and at the same time permit the cam lever 7 to properly clamp and hold the screws regardless of their size. This object I accomplish by means of keys or wedges such as 15 or 16 which are placed between the inner face of the yoke and the outer face of the member 1, the open slots 17 and 18 being formed for the purpose of permitting the keys or wedges to be inserted, the exposed shank of the screw 1- coming in the open slots 17 and 18. In Fig. 5 I have shown a stepped key by means of which a single key may be employed for different adjustments. In cases where keys such as shown in Fig. 6 are employed the number may be increased or decreased as desired, to bring about the desired adjustment.
In use the screw is placed between the jaws 3 while the cam lever 7 is in its opened position and the screw driver or hit placed in position to engage the screw, after which the cam lever 7 is moved into the position shown in Fig. 1, thereby securely clamping the jaws 3 upon the screw, after which the screw driver or bit is rotated together with the holder until the screw is inserted a sufficient distance, after which the cam lever 7 is thrown into its open position, thereby re leasing the holder from the screw, after which the continued rotation of the screw can be carried on in the usual manner.
The top or upper end of the members 1 and 2 are provided with the uide flanges 19 and 20 and for the purpose of better guiding the screw driver in case its shank is round the guide flanges 20 should be provided with the notches 21.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a screw holder for screw drivers comprising jaw members, a yoke connected to one of the members, a cam lever pivotally attached to said yoke, said members provided with, slotted flanges and T-headed flanges respectively, said flanges slidably connected together, jaws adapted to embrace the head of a screw and guide flanges located at opposite ends of the slidable members.
2. In a screw holder for screw drivers, the combination of members slidably connected together at their top and upper ends, a yoke adapted to embrace said sliding members, said yoke secured to one of the sliding members and each of the sliding members provided with a screw holding aw and a handle at its upper end and a cam lever pivotally connected to the yoke.
