COMBINATION-VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,398, dated January 8, 1901.

T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER BROADBOOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in combination-Vises, consisting of a bench-vise and a pipevise, and has for its object to so construct such a tool as to provide for its ready conversion from one form to another and to improve upon the construction shown in United States Patent No. 588,712, issued to me August 24, 1897.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation willnow be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tool when adjusted for use as a bench-vise; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing my improvement adjusted for use as a pipe-vise; Fig. 3, a plan view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a slight modification of the movable jaw and the manner of securing the same upon the operating-bar.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied I provide a bar A, which is flanged at the top and bottom, as indicated at B, and connected by a suitable central web in order that it may readily be guided within a corresponding opening formed in the various members of the tool.
0 is the base of the vise, having the stationary jaw D formed thereon and a foot E whereby it may be supported upon a suitable bench or other surface by being bolted thereto. The bar A, when passed through this base, is free to slide therein, and therefore may be adjusted in any position and held in this adjustment by the set-screw F. In order that the bar A may be made rigid and prevented from cramping, a second base-block O is provided and adapted to guide the bar, and this second base-block is also bolted to the bench or surface upon which the block 0 is secured. G is the movable jaw of the vise, the shank of which has also an opening formed therein to correspond in cross-section to the bar A, and a suitable set-screw H is threaded into this shank, so as to hold the movable jaw in any adjustment upon the bar, said set-screw being preferably provided with a rod I, by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated. J is a screw-block, also fitted to slide upon the bar A and adapted to be held in any adjustment thereon by the set-screw K, and threaded through the upper end of this block is the operating-screw L, having a suitable hand-wheel M thereon for its manipulation, while upon its opposite end is secured or formed the chuck N. This chuck is provided. with the set-screw O, which is set upon the swiveled rod P, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) passed through the stationaryjaw and boss Q, formed thereon.
When my improved tool is to be used as a pipe-vise, the arrangement just described in connection with Fig. 1 is maintained, and the additions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 are made thereto, which are as follows: The pipe-jaws a and b, which have the flanges d, are passed over the flanges of the stationary and movable jaws D and G, respectively, and are held in place by the set-screws 6. These pipejaws are made to interlock-th at is to say, the jaw a is adapted to pass into a slot b, formed in the jaw b, so that the elongated teeth formed upon each of these jaws may slide past each other, and thereby be adapted to hold pipes of various sizes.
From the above description it will be seen that a complete and efficient bench or pipe vise is provided having a sliding jaw, which is not only operated by the screw, but may be quickly adjusted to any desired position upon the block, thus providing for the ready changing from large to small work and giving the vise a very much larger range than would otherwise be possible by the length of the screw,the screw being used only for changing the jaw through limited distances and for clamping the work in the usual manner.
If found desirable, the movable jaw may have a spring R set within the shank thereof in such manner as to draw the upper wall of the opening therein against the upper edge of the bar A, and ratchet-teeth may be formed upon the bar and in the jaw, as shown in Fig. 4, by which arrangement this movable jaw maybe slid to and fro upon the bar and locked by the ratchet and spring when not in use without the necessity of having to manipulate a set-screw.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In combination, a base, a stationary jaw formed therewith, a bar slidable through the stationary jaw, a jaw adjustably secured to the bar, a screw-block fitted to slide on the bar, a screw threaded-through the top of the screw-block, a chuck on the end of the screw, a rod swiveled in the stationary jaw, and means for binding the chuck and swiveled rod together.
2. In combination, a base, a stationary jaw formed therewith, a bar slidable through the stationary jaw, a jaw adjustably secured to the bar, a screw-block fitted to slide on the bar, a screw threaded through the top of the screw-block, a chuck on the end of the screw, a rod swiveled in the stationary jaw, means for binding the chuck and swiveled rod together, jaws having flanges embracing flanges of the stationary and movable jaws, one of said jaws having a vertical slot and the opposite jaw being slidable therein.
