Letters Patent No. 81,917, dated September 8, 1868.
IMPROVED LAMP-GHIMNEY CLEANER.
@its ttetnle referrer in in there lrtters tant rnrfmrking met uf the arme.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be itknown that I, M. N. LOVELL, of Erie, in the county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Lamp-Chimney Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved lamp-chimney cleaner, which will accomplish the work in a better 4manner than those now in use, and which can be furnished at less cost. v
It consists in one or two curved handles, provided with clamps, whereby a number` of slips of soft paper maybe clamped to the said handle, upon the bent portion thereof, in such. manner that the slips may be turned over lilre the leaves of a book, and one after another used as they become foul, the said cleaner to be inserted inthe chimney when used in the ordinary manner.
In the drawings-.-
Figure 1 represents a view of my improved cleaner when composed of one part.
Figure 2 represents the same when composed of two parts, and
Figure 3 represents a section on the line :a :v of g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents `a handle, which I make by preference of wood, and which may be curved in the part B, as shown, and otherwise curved or straight, as desired. The curved portion, B, is provided with a groove, a, in the oval face, as shown in Iig. 3, and with a wire spring, b, attached to the end, and having a prolongation extending over the curved portion B to the hook G, the latter running through a holen the handle, and arranged to be turned to hook over the end of the spring, holding it in the groove of the said curved portion of the handle. Between the said spring and handle may be inserted any suitable number of slips of soft paper, d, which will be pressed in the central portion by the wire spring into the groove in the oval part of the handle, and held therein in a manner similar to the leaves of a book. l
The cleaner so constructed may be inserted within the chimney with the leaves spread open, and the paper rubbed thoroughly over the interior surface of the lamp, by which it will be eil'ectually cleaned. When the leaves have become foul by contact with the foul glass, they may be turned over, presenting a clean surface again, until the whole amount of paper has been used.
By reason of the convex form ofthe handle to which the leaves are secured, they willlremain open at the desired pla-ce. being held in an open position, in consequence of the greater tension on the portion near the cehtre, lengthwise thereof.
lIn fig. 2, I have represented a cleaner composed of two parts jointed togctherat e by a pivot, When composed of two partsI find it-pref'erable to curve the handles as shown atf, whereby a better control of the parts may be effected when held in one hand, as it must be in use In vibrating the' parts to bring the cleaning portions in contact with the various sizes of chimneys, as, for instance, if the two handles are straight, when the size ofthe chimney is'such as to bring the straight parts of -the handles parallel with each other, it would be diicult to change them from this position with one hand.
Pieces of cloth, or any other suitable material, may be used instead of paper, if preferred, and when the whole has become foul from use, it may be readily removed by disconnecting the end of the spring?) from the hook, and a fresh supply of paper or other cleaning-material supplied.
yI fI-aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The handle A of a lamp-chimney cleaner, provided with the spring-clamp b and hook e, substantially as -and for the.- purpose described.
V2. The handleA of' a lamp-chimney cleaner, provided with the grooved and curved portion B, in combination with the clamping-spring b and hook e, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention'signed by me, this day of April, 1868.
` M. N. LOVELL. Witnesses:
ALEX. F. ROBERTS,
J. W. B. CovINeroN.
