UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINNIE O. WILBURN, OF LEADVILLE, COLORADO.
MOP-HEAD.
SEECIFZCA'EION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,155, dated October 8, 1901.
Application filed May 9, 1900. Renewed May 17, 1901. Serial No. 60,764. (No model.)
To all 2077,0722, it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE O. VVILBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of 0010- rado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads andIdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to mop-heads; and it consists of an improved mop head or holder in which the handle of the mop is adapted to be rotated to move the clamping-jaws inward or outward to engage and relieve the mopcloth.
My invention further consists in the novel employment at suitable points on the outer faces of the jaws, respectively, of a revoluble rubber plate or drier and of a revolublyadjustable sponge-holder. v Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in side elevation the body portion of the mop-holder, preferably formed of sheet metal. Fig. 2 represents a like view in cross-section, while Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the holder. Fig. 4. shows an end view of the jaw carrying the sponge-holder.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents a set of jaws, one of them, B, being pivoted upon the other, 0, each of which is approximately triangular in shape and which present inner concave faces I) c, that terminate in their lower front ends in inwardlybent portions h c, that stand at right angles to the jaw-faces and in a common plane with each other and which are provided with interlocking teeth that are formed on their meeting edges.
The jaw O is extended rearwardly to form integrally a sleeve D, which is provided with internal threads d, that are adapted to receive the vertically-adjustable screw-spindle E of the detachable handle F. At a suitable point intermediate the sleeved end D and the triangular-shaped end of the jaw O, I provide ears .e e, which are adapted to receive and embrace a like-disposed pair of ears ff,
arranged in a pivotal relation therewith and which are held in such relation by a screwbolt h. Between the ears fand f there is bent hub-like about the screw-bolt extending between said ears a bow-shaped cam H, that presents an are bearing having a common axis with said bolt and that is arranged directly in the path of the vertical or end Wise movement of the screw-spindle E and against which the latter is adapted to bear for the purpose of adjusting the relative dis tance between the teeth of said jaws in their clamping action on the mop cloth or brush K and against which the tapered end 3 of a screw-spindle is adapted to bind to normally hold the jaws in a closed position.
Centrally pivoted on the front face of the jaw B is located the revolubly-adjustable sponge-holder I, which consists of an ellip tical-shaped strip of sheet metal that is bent to form hook-arms r1, that are adapted to engage and properly hold a sponge, as shown in Fig. 1. The holder I is pivoted at a; by a screw-bolt t. In a like position on the jaw O is pivoted, by the bolt 25, a rubbing-plate or drier L, the construction of which consists of two metal strips held firmly together and supported so as to stand 01f at right angles from the face of the jaw.
Having described my invention, what I desire to claim as new and useful is In a mop-head the combination of two angular jaws pivoted together, one of said jaws having a sleeve provided with internal threads, the other jaw being provided with a cam carried on its inner side, and a vertically-adj ustable handle provided with a threaded spindle with a conical end thereto, the threaded portion of said spindle engaging with the threaded sleeve of one of the jaws and the conical end of the spindle engaging the cam on the other jaw, whereby the jaws are brought into a closed position or released therefrom by the rotation of the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MINNIE O. WILBURN.
Witnesses:
J. H. PATTERSON, J. GORDON SMITH.
