UNITED STATES PATENT omen MARY NETH VAN DERBEOK, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
SCRUBBER.
SPECIFICATIGN formingpart of Letters Patent NO. 67 9,133, dated. July 23, 1901. Application filed January 18, 1901. Serial No. 453,728. (No model.)
T0 60% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, M'ARY NETH VAN DER- BECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Scrubber, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates toadevice for scrubbing floors, rugs, and carpets which enables the work to be effectively executed without requiring great physical labor and necessitating the bending over of the person doing the work.
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claim is a definition of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
(t represents a brush, which may be of the ordinary or any desired construction. This brush is held in a clamp 19, fitted with a thumb-screw 0, between which and the outer jaw h of the clamp the body of the brush is held. The clamp has a bifurcated shank d, carrying the journal of a wheel 6, which is arranged to run on the floor to hold the brush level and also to bear part of the thrust inv cident to the Working of the brush, as will be fully explained hereinafter. This wheel is preferably provided with a rubber tire, as shown, for enabling the convenient use of the scrubber. A handle f is provided, and
this handle is pivotally connected with the members of the shank d, through the medium of arms g, fastened to the handle and pivoted to the respective parts of the bifurcated shank.
In using the invention the brush is placed on the floor, serves to hold the scrubbing de-.
vice level and apply the brush to the best effect. At the same time it bears a portion of the thrust against the brush due to its support and operation, which without the wheel would tend to forcibly engage the scrubber with the floor at the edge nearest the handle and impede its movement in a horizontal plane, causing the brush to wear unevenly and have less effective contact with the floor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A scrubbing device, comprising a clamp adapted to embrace a brush a screw working in the clamp to hold the brush and projected rearwardly from the clamp, said clamp having a bifurcated shank projecting rearwardly and essentially horizontally below the screw, a wheel mounted in the bifurcated shank, and a handle having two arms fastened thereto and embracing and pivoted to the bifurcated shank of the clamp, said arms being capable of straddling the screw so as to swing upward over the same.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
