Be it known thatl, JOHN A. ZERBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in a Combined Scrubber and Mop; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improved convertible implement adapted for use either as a brushholder or mop-holder; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved convertible implement, showing the same adapted for use as a scrubbing-brush holder. Fig. 52 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the same adapted for use as a mopholder.

1n the embodiment of my invention I provide a jaw-frame 1, which is rectangular in form, is made preferably of a single piece of metal, and comprises the parallel side bars 2, the head-bar 3, and the lower or cross bar 1. At the center of the head-bar 3 is a socket for the reception and retention of one end of a pole or handle a of suitable length. The said socket is provided in one side with an opening, through which a screw is inserted, which engages the socketed end of the pole or handle and secures the latter in the socket, as will be understood.

A rod 7 connects the side bars 2 near the head-bar 3 and forms the pivot for a jawframe 8. The said jaw-frame is bent from a single piece of wire of a suitable length and thickness, is substantially in the form of the letter U and comprises the side arms 9and the connecting-bar 10, the said side arms being at right angles to the said connecting-bar. In the handles, between the said side arms and the connecting-bar, are circular eyes 11,which are formed by spirally bending the wire, and at the upper ends of the said side arms are similarly formed bearing eyes 12, through which the rod 7 extends, and hence the said jaw-frame 8 is pivotally connected to the frame I 1, so that its lower side or outer side, as the case may be, may move toward and from the similar side of the outer frame 1. jaw-frame 8 is adapted to fold into said frame 1. On the rod 7 are coiled springs 13, the ends of which are respectively engaged with notches 14: in the head-bar 3 of the jaw-frame 1 and with the side arms 9 of the jaw-frame 8, the function of the said springs being to normally close the said jaw-frame 8 in and against the said jaw-frame 1. To the eyes 11 of the jaw-frame 8 are attached the ends of a bail 15, which is made of a single piece of wire and is formed at its center with an eye 16, to which a cord may be attached, as will presently appear.

A plate 17 is secured on the outer side of the bar 1 of frame 1, and one edge thereof projects inwardly and upwardly therefrom, as at 18. A red 19 connects the side arms 2 of the frame 1 together and is disposed at a slight distance from and within the inner side of the bar 1. The said side arms 2 are provided at a suitable distance from the bar 1 with openings 20.

\Vhen my improved implement is to be used as a scrul bing-brush holder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the scrubbing-brush is provided on its back with transversely-disposed keepers 21, which are strips of metal of suitable length and breadth secured on the back of the brush by means of screws 22 or other suitable devices and each having one end curved upwardly, as at 23, and having its opposite end somewhat tapered and projecting outwardly from one side of the brush-head, as at 24. The upturned ends 23 of the said keepers are inserted between the bar 4 of the frame 1 and the rod 19. Said keepers bear against the ends of the plate 1'7, and the outwardlyprojecting ends 24; of the said keepers are engaged by the eyes 11 of the jaw-frame 8, the bar 10 of the said jaw-frame bearing against one side of the head of the scrubbing-brush, as shown, and hence the latter is firmly secured to the holder.

1V hen the brush has been removed from the holder, the latter may be used as a mopholder, as shown in Fig. 3, the mop being placed between the frames 1 and 8 and clamped The said between them by the action of the springs on the said frame 8 and against the upturned edge 18 of the plate 17 as will be understood.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a clamping jaw frame having means on one side for the attachment of a handle thereto, and a plate on its outer side having an inwardly and upwardly extending edge, a spring-pressed pivotallymounted clamping-jaw frame in the first-mentioned jaw frame, having openings 11 and adapted to close toward the first-mentioned frame, an implement having transversely-disposed keepers 21 to engage the outer side of the first-menti0ned frame, the ends of the said plate, and the openings 11 of the other frame, substantially as described.

2. An implement-holder of the class described, comprising a rectangular outer frame having means on one side thereof for the attachment of a handle thereto, a cross-bar proximate to but spaced from its outer side, and a plate on its outer side having an inwardly and upwardly extending edge, and a spring-pressed jaw-frame, pivotally connected to and of such size and shape as to adapt it to close within the first-mentioned frame and against the cross-bar thereof, substantially as described.
