Cnmbined Rein-Holders and Whip-Sockets.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oLE MATsoN, or'MoLmE, rnnnvors.
|MPRovEMENr INCOMBINED REIN-HoLor-:Rs AND wHlP-socKE-rs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,69?, datedv May' l2, 1874 application led March 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE MATsoN, of Moline, county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bein-Holder and Whip- Socket, of which the following is a specification: v
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined rein and whip holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring'to the annexed drawing, in which--4 Figure 1 is a front elevation of my combined rein and whip holder. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof, with the covering-plate detached; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the line w w, Fig. 1,.
A represents a plate, of any suitable form or` shape, to be fastened, by screws, bolts, or other means, to the dash-board of a vehicle. This plate is formed with a box or casing, B, in the center, which is open on the rear side, and closed by a plate, C, fastened from the front by one or more screws, a. At one end of the plate A is formed an upward-projecting arm or jaw, D, and at the other end is formed a projection, E, resembling in shapea hand held concave. Grepresents an L-shaped arm or jaw, provided at the inner end of its hori zontal part with a shaft or crank-pin, @,which extends at lright angles with said horizontal part, and parallel with, but in the opposite direction to, the vertical part of the jaw.
The shaft a is passed vertically downward from the top into the box or casing B, andis there acted upon by a spring to hold the jaw G against the stationary jaw D, for holding the lines or reins when they are inserted between them. The more the horses pull on the reins the tighter will they be held, owing to the adjoining surfaces of the jaws I) and G being made cam-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the front of the box B is made a horizonA tal slot, b, through which is passed a thumbpiece, H, provided at its inner end within the box with a shaft, a', extending toward both sides at right angles with it, and which shaft is acted upon by the spring above referred to, to hold the thumb H against the hand E, for holding a whip when inserted between them.
The interior of the box or casing B is suitably shaped to form bearings, in which the shafts or pins a a may turn. The spring used is a single fiat steel spring, d, which is placed in grooves made in the two shafts, and from which grooves project flat leaves or lips to give more power to the spring by increasing the flat surfaces against which it acts. The lips :c :c also act as stops for the movement of the jaw G and thumb H by striking the back covering-plate C. The spring d is pressed or held in the center by a lug, o, on the inner side of the covering-plate C.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The plate A, with box B and stationary jaw I), in combination with the L-shaped jaw G, provided with the shaft a, and acted upon by the spring d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The plate A, with slotted box B and hand E, in combination with the thumb H, provided with the shaft a and spring d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The single flat spring d, in combination with the grooved or flattened shafts a a and lug t', substantially as and for the purposes set fortl In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 13th day of March, 187 4.
OLE MATSON.
