Description

(No Model.) r
I. L. LANDIS.
WHIFFLETREE HOOK; .No. 560,804. Patented May 26, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS, OF MILWAUKEE, WVISOONSIN.
WHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 560,804, dated May 26, 1896.
Application filed July s, 71895. Serial No. 554,801. N modeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, State of Visconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Whifl'letreeIIooks; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of whiffletree-hooks in which a tongue is employed as a means of holding a trace upon the hook with which it may be engaged; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device to attach and detach the trace readily, and at the same time to be secure against detachment when in use, as well as to prevent rattling of said tongue.
To this end my invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of whiflietree with my improved hook, the trace and a rubber bufier being in section on line 1 1 of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a like view with the tongue in position to receive the trace, and is in section on line 2 2 of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is an end elevation with trace in position and tongue locked. Fig. 4 is a plan view in section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a whiifletree-thimble which is shouldered to receive a yielding washer d and provided at its outer end with a flat extension a, which is forked to receive a tongue B, that has a slot 1), through which a pin a passes and is upset in the forked ends of said extension. The tongue at its lower end has a right angle c, that strikes against the base of the fork and holds it parallel thereto when the trace C is being slipped on. After this is done the tongue is rotated ,in an upward direction 011 pin at until it comes against the trace. It is then pushed down the length of the slot 7) and the trace is secured. The yielding washer d forces the trace out against the tongue in its locked position and prevents all rattling or liability of the tongue to unlock, and also compensates for all variations in the thickness of the traces. The yielding washer cl, by preference a rubber ring which neatly fits over the body of the folded extension a, serves at all times to hold the trace out against the tongue B when said tongue is in its holding position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a whiffletree hook or fastening, the body of the tree having a forked extension, a tongue pivoted in the fork of said extension by a pin passing through the sides of the fork and through the slot in the tongue, and the ring of elastic material interposed between the tongue in the fork and ashoulder on the end of the tree.
2. In a whiffletree-fastening, the body having a forked extension, the tongue pivoted in the fork of said extension, and having one end pointed and the other beveled to conform to a beveled surface on the fork, and the elastic washer, all combined and relatively arranged substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
ISRAEL L. LANDIS.
