RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,170, dated January 24, 1899.
Application filed November 8, 1897. Serial No. 657,777. (No model.)
To aZZ whont it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN FAIRBAIRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of XVayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rein-holders; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for holding the driving-reins, which may be detachably secured to the dash or dash-rail of a buggy of any construct-ion and which will firmly hold the reins in place therein, which object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the body of the vehicle, showing my improved device attached to the dash-rail thereof and showing by dotted lines the reins secured therein. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 at of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a like section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the letters of reference, A designates a fixed upright having a curved outer face a and provided with an integral jaw B, projecting at right angles therefrom, which is concavo-convex in form. C designates a movable jaw of like formation which is located opposite the jaw 13 and is detachably secured thereto by means of a clampingscrew 1), which passes through said parts, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:. The lower end or casing A of the upright A depends some distance below said clamping-jaws and is provided with extending side flanges c, which are adapted to be folded inward on the face of a flat spring D, the lower end of which is inserted between said flanges which are forced onto said spring to securely retain it in place. The curve of said spring D is opposed to that of the upright A, so as to form a flaring opening cl between their upper ends, the contour of said opposed parts bringing their adjacent faces quite together at the point e, from which point they separate, forming a larger opening f between their opposed faces. The opening 61 at the upper end permits the reins to be readily entered between the confining-spring D and the upright A, and by drawing said reins downward they are permitted to rest in the larger opening f between said parts, the contracted point e of said opening preventing the lines from being accidentally withdrawn, the spring D yielding as the lines are drawn down ward, the tension of which securely retains them in place. This upright device may be readily attached to any style of dash or rail by simply loosening the screw 1), so that the jaws B 0 may separate sufficiently to receive the dash-rail E, as shown in Fig. 1, or the vertical edge of the dash, as the case may be, the holder being securely retained in place by tightening said screw b, so as to cause said jaws to firmly clamp the rail or edge of the dash, by which means the device may be readily attached to any buggy and quickly and easily removed when desired.
It will be seen that this device is very simple, light, and inexpensive and may be readily secured in any desired position, serving when in place a convenient and secure means for holding the reins, preventing them from falling to the ground and getting under the feet of the horse.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a rein-holder, the combination of the rigid upright having a reverse curve in the face thereof and embracing flanges at its base, the confining-spring secured between said flanges at the base of said upright and standing adjacent thereto, said spring curved opposite to the curve of the face of said upright, the fixed jaw projecting at right a11- gles from the rear face of said upright and formed integral therewith, the movable jaw 5 let into said fixed jaw, and the screw passing through said jaws for tightening them upon the dash.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FAIRBAIRN.
