REIN-HoLnEn.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed April 18, 1906, Serial No. 312,462. Renewed May 18. 1907. Serial No. 374,351.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, IRVING SKINNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bush, in the county of Orange, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention has relation to means for attachment to the dasher of a carriage or other light vehicle for temporarily holding the driving reins of harness in case of the stoppage of the team for any purpose.
It is usually the case when a team is stopped temporarily to Wind the drivingreins about the whip holder to throw them loosely over the dasher or to dispose of them in some other Way that is either not safe, or so that they cannot be readily caught up in proper position in case of danger or necessity, or to so entangle them with the whip-socket or other means connected with or forming a part of the dasher, as that they cannot be gotten hold of at all in order to make them useful in controlling the horse or horses.
It is the object of my invention to provide a reinholder that may be adjustableto a position that will allow of the reins being temporarily secured in place, so that they will be held from being switched out by the tail of the horse and fall down under, his feet; and yet kept and held in place and position so that they can be quickly caught hold of in their proper order and drawn out of the holder by a simple pull thereon.
The nature of the invention consists of adjustable vertical arms extending up from the outer end of a clamp by which the device is secured to the edge of 35 the dash by means of a thumb-screw or similar means.
The arms constituting the rein-holder may not only be adjusted from a vertical to an inclined position, but are provided with means for adjusting them with respect to each other. Furthermore, said arms are given a peculiar form which fits them in the highest degree in performing their functions.
The invention will first be described in connection with the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, and then pointed out in the claim.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the invention showing it attached to the edge of the dashboard as it will be when in use. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the invention. 3 is a sectional view taken on a line running through the dash-clamp and joint of the device.
Similar figures of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the construction of the invention I form a clamp 5 from a suitable piece of sheet metal, doubling a strip of proper width and length upon itself, or nearly so, giving rounded bends to the free ends 6 so that they may it nicely around the covered frame at the side of the dash 7, to which they will be secured by a clamping screw 8 passing through the two lateral arms 9 to draw them together in a well-known way. At the bend 10 of the piece forming the clamp 5 the form of a rounded socket is given thereto, in which the rounded bend 11 of the upright part or clamp 12 of the device is constructed to fit, and to be clamped by a clamping screw 13.
The two vertical arms 14 of the part 12 constitute the rein-holder proper, and in form are offset outward in opposite directions at their lower part, and are given a rounded bend inwardly at their .upper ends. This form or any other particular shape, for that matter, is not essential to the improvement, but is shown merely as one that is desirable. Above the rounded bend ll of the part 12 there is a clamp-screw 15 passed through the rein-holding arms in a way that it may be operated to clamp the said arms together and release them, if desired.
In operation, the part 5 will be clamped on the edge socketed bend 10 will extend out laterally and have the lower rounded end 11 of the rein-holding arms set and clamped in the said socket 10 at such angle as may be considered most desirable. The rein-holding arms, between which it is proposed that the lines shall be justed as may be thought most desirable. In this position the invention will be completed for use. The reins may be simply slipped in and out between the upright arms of the part 12 from above, when once said arms are adjusted; or, in some cases, they may be clamped or pinched between the arms by the clampscrew 15 after they may have been slipped between the arms.
As a whole, the invention is not only simple in construction, but it is adapted to be arranged where it will be most handy in use and it is capable of operation in the most eflicient and satisfactory manner.
What is claimed as the invention is l 1. A rein-holder for vehicles comprising a clamping part adapted to besecured at one end to the side of the dash and provided with a socket extending laterally from the edge of the dash, reinholding arms having a rounded bend at their lower end adapted to be adjusted and clamped in the socket of the first-mentioned part and provided with means for clamping the said arms closely together or releasing them.
of the dash at the most convenient point so that the I held when not in the hands of the driver, will be ad- 2. A rein-holder for vehicles consisting of .a clamp adapted to be secured to the edge of the dash, combined with arms for holding the reins between them adaptedto be adjustably secured at their lower ends to the clamp 7 tending and then curved inwardly toward each other at their upper ends, the said rein-holding arms being adjustably secured at their lower ends to the outer end of the clamp and exvertically therefrom the said arms themselves being adapted to be adjusted toward and from each other. In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
IRVING SKINNER.
