Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,564, dated September 7, 1875 application filed February 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD N. PoR- TER, WM. E. HAwEs, and GHARLEs R. PAGE,
of Morrisville, in the county of Lamoille and in the State of Vermont, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Rein- Holders; and do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a reinholder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, refer' ring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our reinholder, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through a part thereof.
A represents a bar, of any suitable dimensions, provided with two uprightstandards, B B, forming the frame of our rein-holder, and which may be ornamented in any suitable manner, or made plain, as desired. From the bar A, between the two standards, rise two vertical rods, a a, upon each of which are placed two ca1ns,O O. These cams are constructed as shown, each being slightly cut away at opposite ends to overlap each other when placed upon the rod, leaving a wide enough space between said overlapping parts to admit a spring, l), in front of the rod, and the ends of this spring lie in grooves on the rear sides of the cams. The spring D acts upon the camsG to press them forward against pins :v w, which prevent the cams from turning too far forward.
By the arrangement of the four cams C, as shown and described, the reins may be placed either together or separate, as desired, and it will also admit of holding the lines separately when four horses are driven.
Our rein-holder is fastened to the dashboard by means of two bars, E E, which are slotted vertically at their lower end, placed on the dash-board, and fastened by means of setscrews b b. The upper ends of these bars are formed with shoulders d on their inner sides, and upon these shoulders rest ears or lugs ce, projecting from the under side of the reinholder frame A B. Through these lugs, and through the upper ends of the bars, passes a rod, h, fastened by means of a nut, c'. By this means the rein-holder can be adjusted atany angle desired with relation to the bars E E, and held firmly when thus adjusted, which admits of the rein-holder being used on any dash board, as, no matter what angle the dashboard is on, the rein-holder may be set perpendicularly.
This mode of attaching a rein-holder to a dash-board maybe used with rein-holders of any construction.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The cams C C, pivoted on the rod a, in combination with the spring D, passed in front of the rod, and its ends resting in grooves on the rear sides of the cams, sub` stantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the bar A, having standards B B formed in one piece, and rods a a with two grooved cams, G C. pvoted on said rods, and spring D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. f
3. The combination, with arein-holder having downward-projecting ears or lugs e e on its base, of the bars E E, slotted at their lower ends, and provided with shoulders d at their upper ends, the set-screws b, rod h, and nut i, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination, with arms temporarily attached to the dash-board, of a rein-holder adjustable rotatively on such arms, whereby the rein-holder may be set in proper position, no matter what the angle of the dash-board, substantially as set forth.
