Be it known that we, CHARLES KOHN and TILLIAM D. STITZEL, citizens of the United States, residing `at Pawnee City, in the county of Pawnee, State of Nebraska, have and useful Improvements in Draft-Eveners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention `relates to new and useful improvements in draft eveners.

One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which is capable of being quickly and easily applied to the draft. tongue or pole of any vehicle without any modifications to the tongue or vehicle.

Another object is to provide a novel and eiiicient device for permitting the hitching of three horses to a vehicle which is ordinai-ily used with two horses.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when takenV in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Figure 1 is a top plan View of a draft evener made inaccordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attaching plate removed from the device.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents a tongue or draft pole of a vehicle which is provided withthe usual metal clip 11 for attaching the doubletree thereto, said clip having the vertical opening 12 which registers'with a similar opening 13 in the tongue, for the reception of a pivot bolt 14.

The doubletree, which is used in connection with this invention, includes a bar 15 which receives the pivot bolt 14 therethrough, adjacent one end, said end being disposed transversely of the tongue, as shown. Engaged transversely of the said end of the bar 15, and straddling the same, is a substantially U -shaped plate 16, the

same being perforated, as at 17, for the reception of the before-mentioned pivot bolt 14, whereby said bar is capable of swinging movement within said plate. Pivotally mounted within the plate, in advance of the bar 15, is the inner end of a short bar 18, said bar having on the outer end a swingletree 19. Disposed in oblique relation to the bar 15 and the bar 18 are the upper and lower links 20 which are pivotally connected to the said bars, as shown. The other end of the bar 15 is also provided with a centrally pivoted bar 21 which carries the two swingletrees 22.

It will be noted that the rear ends of the plate 16 are formed with the recesses 23 which receive the clip 11 therein and thus hold the said plate against any sidewise movement, while the pivot bolt holds the plate, forwardly of the said recesses.

By this construction the device is capable of attachment to any vehicle tongue, by placing the plate 16 under the clip and placing the bolt 14; in its usual place. Thus the three horse evener is capable of ready attachment to any draft tongue.

In the ends of the U-shaped plate 16 are formed the openings 24 which are adapted to receive the pivot bolt when the device is used with agriculturalV or other machines wherein the doubletree is not fastened to the tongue or pole.

What is claimed is:

The combination with a draft pole and the doubletree clip thereof, of an evener including an evener bar disposed transversely of the pole, a substantially U-shaped plate engaged in straddling relation to the evener bar and beneath the said clip, a pivot member disposed through the plate, the evener bar and the pole, the rear ends of said plate being formed with recesses in which are received the said clip, whereby said plate is held against lateral swinging movement with respect to the pole.
