Description

N. F. REED & T. o. ANDRES,
Rein-Holders.
No.l50,081, Patented April 21, 18 74.

NATHAN F. REED AND. THOMAS O. ANDEUS, OF NORTH WQLGOTT, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HQLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,081, dated April 21, 1874; application filed March 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, N. F. REED and T. O. ANDRUS, of North Wolcott, in the county of Lamoille and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction an d arrangement of a rein-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a rear View, of our rein-holder.
A represents an ordinary clamp, with setscrew it, the top part B of the clamp being formed of an elongated concavo-eonvex bar to fit over the upper edge of the dash-board. In or from the center of the elongated bar B rises a post, 0, through the upper end of which passes a rod, 1). Upon this red are hung two cams, D D, one on each side of the center post 0. These cams are constructed substantially as shown in the drawing, and each is provided on the outer edge, near or a suitable distance from the lower end, with a projecting lip, d. E represents an ornamental weight, suspended on a cord, 0, the ends of which are attached to the inner lower ends of the two cams. The outer surfaces of the cams, as well as the upper surface of the elongated bar B, are corrugated or toothed, as shown in Fig. 1.
By the construction of this double reinholder each rein is adjusted at a time, one on each side, the same as held when driving. One rein can be drawn at a time without moving the other in the least. It may be used for two, four, or six horses, as there is plenty of room under each cam for two or more reins, and the cams will hold them as Well as one.
If the horse (or horses) is frightened, the lines can be drawn at a moments warning, just as they want to be used, without pulling them out and separating them, as is necessary in single rein-holders.
The weight E brings the cams down onto the reins as soon as adjusted, and holds them down on the reins firmly.
WVe are aware that a rein-holder consisting of a single corrugated cam pivoted on a standard upon a metallic frame, so that the reins may be slipped between them and held, is not new, and we do, therefore, not claim such, broadly, as being our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the clamp A B, post 0, red I), and cams D I), provided with lips d d, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The weight E and cord 6, in combination with the cams D D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. I
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 27th day of February, 1874.
NATHAN F. REED. THOMAS O. ANDRUS.
