UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. LEE AND DANIEL M. OSTRANDER, OF WHITEHALL, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlllL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l75,l l5, dated March 21, 1876; application filed January 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS A. LEE and DANIEL M. OSTRANDER, both of Whitehall, in the county' of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and we do hereby declare that the followin full, clear, and exact description ther erence being had to the aceompanyingidrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a thill coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which ourinvention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of our thin-coupling. Fig. 2 is a detached view of a part thereof. r
A represents a vehicle-axle, with be'dpiece B, over which passes a clip, 0, the ends of said clip forming screw-rods a, to pass through two plates, 1) D, under the axle, and fastened by nuts b on the ends of the rods. The two plates D D are formed on their forward ends with the two halves E E of a circular bisected socket, respectively arranged to stand at an angle upward, as shown. Gr represents the thill-iron, formed with a ball, H, on its end, to be placcd in the socket E E, and the thill: iron projecting through a slot, 6, in the front part of the upper socket-section E. Between the two sections of the socket is placed a fiat rubber ring or washer, d, which is clamped firmly between them when the nuts b are .tling or noise. On the thill-iron G is placed a concave washer or cap, I, of leather or other suitable material, which covers the slot or opening 0 in the socket, to prevent the ingress of dust or dirt.
This thill-coupling is simple in construction, cheap and durable, and not liable to get out of order.
. We do not claim, broadly, the idea of a thill-coupling with a ball-and-socket joint, as we are aware that such is not new.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The washer d, clamped between the sections E E, and projecting within the circular recess, in combination with the ball H, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the clip 0, plates D D, socket E E, thill-iron G, with ball H, rubber ring 01, and washer or cap I, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our ownwe affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS A. LEE. DANIEL M. OSTRANDER.
Witnesses: CHARLES 0. LEE,
SAMUEL H. DONALDSON.
