T H. WATSON. EEIN HOLDER Patented Oct. 6, 1891.
. 139 W :Aflrgzys, v I W I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. VATSON, OF ITASOA, TEXAS.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,734, dated October 6, 189-1.
Application filed June 24, 1891. Serial No. 397,357. (No model.)
citizen of the United States, residing at Itasca,
in the county of Hill and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Rein-Holder, of
7 which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carriages and wagons, and more especially to the rein-holders used therein, and the object of the same is to produce an improved device of this character adapted to hold the reins when the driver is absent and capable of being tripped by pressure of the drivers foot after he has returned to his place.
To this end the invention consists in the specific construction of two parts or members, one of which is secured to the side of the wagon, and the second of which is pivoted to the first, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated on the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein' Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in position upon the side of a wagon. Fig.2 is aperspective view of one part of the invention in position upon the side of a wagon. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the other part.
The device is composed of'two parts 1 and 2, one of which 1 is rigidly secured upon the side 3 of a wagon.
The part 1 of the device is formed with a horizontal portion or jaw 4,21. downwardlyprojecting rear end 5, an upwardly-projecting front end 6, having a recess 10 in its upper end, and an enlarged flattened portion 7, and is secured to the side 3 of a wagon by means of bolts 8, having washers or collars 9 placed thereon between the side 3 of the wagon and the part 1 of the rein-holder to hold the latter a suitable distance from the side of the wagon, as shown in Fig. 2.
The part 2 of the device has a horizontal portion or jaw 11, a downwardly-projecting front end 12, and is bent downwardly, as at 13, having a flattened enlargement 1e and a rearwardly-extending lever 15.
One of the bolts 8, which secures 'the device to the wagon, passes through the enlarged portion 7 of the part 1 and through the enlarged portion 14. of the part 2, thus pivotally connecting the parts 1 and 2.
The downwardly-projecting front end 12 of the part 2 is arranged to meet the end of the upwardly-projecting front end 6 of the part 1 when the device is closed, as iuFig. 1, and is provided with a stud 16, which enters the recess 10 in the said end 6 toprevent the reins from slipping between the two ends whenreins 18 to be inserted. Then the lever is released, tlie spring 17 will close the jaws and bring the said ends together, thus holding the reins securely. To remove the reins it is only necessary to press down upon the lever 15, thus opening the jaws, when the reins may be removed.
What is claimedas new is- The herein-described rein-holder, the same comprising two parts, one part having ahorizontal jaw, an upturned front end with a recess therein, a flattened portion at the rear end of the jaw, and a downwardly-turned rear end, washers beneath said part, bolts passing through the part and through the washers and securing the device to the side of a Wagon-body, another part comprising a horizontal jaw. a downwardly-turned front end' meeting said upturned end and having a stud entering said recess, a downwardly turned rear end leading into a flattened portion, and a handle extending rearwardly therefrom, one'of the fastening-bolts passing through both said flattened portions and pivotally connecting the parts, as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. WATSON.
