IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification forming part 01 Letters Patent No.19 [,129, dated May 22, 1877; applicationfiled January 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Near the bottom of the inner side of each Be it known that I, CHARLES FOGKLER, of arm E are pivoted two bow-irons, O O, to
Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tops for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked I thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable top for buggies or other vehicles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a vehicleseat embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged inside view of the lower portion of one of the sets of bows. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the adjusting and fastening device.
A represents an ordinary vehicle-seat, on each side of which are fastened two bent iron arms, B B. These arms extend on the'inside of the side of the seat, and rest on the top thereof, extending a short distance beyond the outer edge thereof, as shown.
G represents a circular plate or disk, provided on its outer side with a series of radial teeth, a, and from its under side project two legs, as m, the lower ends of which are bent outward and fastened by suitable bolts on top of the projecting ends of the arms B B.
F represents a corresponding disk or plate with radial teeth a, to take into the teeth a of the plate G. From the center of the disk F extends a screw, 0, which passes through a center hole in the disk G, and has a thumb nut, P, screwed on its end for fastening the movable disk F to the stationary disk G after it has been adjusted, the teeth a a holding the parts firmly in position.

which the ends of the front and rear bows D D are attached. The lower ends of the bowirons U G are curved inward, as shown, forming knee-joints, and applied on the inside, which is more handy and convenient than when arranged on the outside.
The two bows D l) on each side are connected by a jointed brace, K, which breaks upward in the center, and has a hook, L, attached to it in the center joint. When the top is folded or closed the hooks L engage with eyes or staples N on the center bow H to hold it in this closed position. These braces K K are also on the inside, leaving nothing on the outside to be in the way, and enabling a person on the seat to adjust the top in any position desired without getting out of the vehicle.
1 am fully aware that adjustable tops for children s carriages or other vehicles are not new, and I do, therefore, not claim such, broadly, as being my invention.
My invention is cheap, and easily constructed and operated, and it is equally applicable to four or more bows, as well as to three.
Having thus fully described my intention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a seat, A, the bent arms B B projecting beyond the sides of the seat, the toothed disk G, with legs at {D firmly secured to said arms, and the adjustable toothed disk F carryingthe entire top, and
fastened by means of the screw 0 and thumbnut P, substantially as and for thepurposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the adjustable disk F, of the arm E projecting therefrom, the knee-jointed bow-irons U 0, the bows H and D D, and the jointed brace K with hook L, and the eye N, all constructed as described, with the joints and adjustments all on the inside, substantially as herein set forth.
